Late May through September is the prime window, with warm weather ideal for swimming, boating, and shoreline fishing on Rathbun Lake. June and early September offer the best balance of open facilities and lighter crowds, while July and holiday weekends fill quickly. Spring and fall shoulder seasons bring cool nights, fewer bugs, and good fishing, though some amenities may operate on reduced hours.

Rathbun Lake is an 11,000-acre reservoir offering some of Iowa's best walleye, crappie, and largemouth bass fishing. The state park provides lake access with boat ramps and a marina area suitable for powerboats, pontoons, and kayaks.
The park's designated sand swim beach is a popular summer spot on the north shore of Rathbun Lake. Nearby parking accommodates day-use visitors and is a short walk from the main campground.
Several miles of wooded multi-use trails wind through the park's rolling hardwood forest. Routes are generally rated easy to moderate and connect campgrounds with day-use areas and lake overlooks.
Shaded picnic areas with tables, grills, and shelters are scattered along the lakeshore. Reservable shelters are well suited to group outings and family gatherings.
The oak-hickory woodlands and reservoir shoreline support white-tailed deer, wild turkey, bald eagles, and a wide range of songbirds and waterfowl. Early morning along quiet trails and shoreline points offers the best viewing.
The on-site marina offers boat slips, rentals, and fuel on the lake. It is a convenient launch point for anglers and day cruisers staying in the campground.
Seasonal hunting for deer, turkey, and small game is available on adjacent Rathbun Wildlife Area lands managed by the Iowa DNR. Hunters should review current Iowa regulations and season dates before arrival.
Always an easy booking and great service!

The park is about 90 miles southeast of Des Moines via US-63 and IA-5, roughly a 1 hour 45 minute drive, and about 35 miles west of Ottumwa. RV drivers approach on paved county and state highways with no tunnels or significant mountain grades, though the final park roads are hilly with some tight turns and should be taken at reduced speed. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Des Moines International Airport (DSM).
