Best time to visit Hunting Island State Park

Spring months of March through May offer warm days, low humidity, and fewer bugs, making it the most comfortable window for RV camping. Fall, from late September through early November, brings mild temperatures, warm ocean water, and lighter crowds after Labor Day. Summer is peak season with hot, humid weather, afternoon thunderstorms, and heavy mosquito and biting-fly activity, so reservations fill months in advance. Winter is mild and quiet, though some amenities and programs operate on reduced schedules.

How to get to Hunting Island State Park

The park sits at the end of US-21 on Hunting Island, about 16 miles east of Beaufort, 70 miles south of Charleston (roughly 90 minutes), and 50 miles north of Savannah (about 75 minutes). Access is by paved two-lane highway with no tunnels, mountain passes, or significant grades, so most RV classes can reach the park easily, though the final stretch across marsh causeways has limited shoulders. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Savannah/Hilton Head International (SAV), with Charleston International (CHS) a second option. RVers should watch for low-clearance live oak branches in the campground loops and drive cautiously on the narrow park roads.
