Late May through mid-June and September into early October offer the best balance of warm weather, ocean swimming, and lighter crowds for RV day-trippers. July and August bring peak beach weather but also early entrance-gate closures when the park reaches capacity, so arriving before mid-morning is essential. Spring and fall shoulder seasons are prime for surf fishing, birding, and beachcombing without the summer parking pressure. Winter visits are quiet and scenic, though wind and blowing sand can be intense on the open dunes.

Two designated swimming areas (Bathing Beach 1 and Bathing Beach 2) offer lifeguarded Atlantic surf, bathhouses, and the largest paved RV-friendly day-use lots in the park. Both fill quickly on summer weekends, so early arrival is essential.
Island Beach is one of the most popular surf-fishing destinations on the Jersey Shore, with striped bass, bluefish, and fluke as primary targets. Anglers in 4x4 vehicles can buy a mobile sportfishing permit to access designated beach driving zones; tow vehicles and trailers parked in paved lots can also reach the surf on foot.
The interpretive center near the middle of the park introduces the barrier-island ecosystem, dune plants, and shorebird life. It's an easy stop with paved parking suitable for RVs and trailers.
This short walking trail crosses the island to a viewing blind on Barnegat Bay, where ospreys, herons, and wintering waterfowl are easy to spot. The trailhead has a small lot off the main park road.
Calm bayside waters along the western shore are ideal for kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards, with launch points at designated bay-access areas. Outfitters in Seaside Park rent gear for visitors who arrive without their own.
The park road ends at a parking area overlooking Barnegat Inlet with sweeping views of Barnegat Lighthouse across the water. The lot is paved but compact, so larger Class A motorhomes should scout space before committing.
Miles of undeveloped beach between the swimming zones offer quiet walking, shelling, and dolphin spotting offshore. Pull-off lots along the park road give easy beach access for short out-and-back strolls.
Jacek was amazing with communication and having the advantages being able to have the RV delivered and set up was amazing. I wouldn’t have been able to do it myself. The camper was super clean, and comfortable. We had a great time.

Island Beach State Park, NJ, United States
The park entrance sits just south of Seaside Park on Central Avenue (Route 35), about 75 miles south of New York City and roughly a 90-minute drive from Newark or Philadelphia. Most RVs approach via the Garden State Parkway to Exit 82, then east on Route 37 across the Mathis Bridge to Route 35 South; the bridge and causeway have no tunnels but can back up heavily on summer weekends, so plan early arrivals. RV travelers should note that the park road is paved but narrow with limited turnaround space at the south end, and oversized rigs may find parking lots tight during peak season. The closest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Newark Liberty International (EWR), with Atlantic City International (ACY) and Philadelphia (PHL) as alternates.
