Best time to visit James Island State Park

Late spring through early fall, roughly May to September, offers the driest weather and the calmest Rosario Strait crossings for small boats and kayaks. July and August bring the warmest temperatures and the most reliable conditions for beach landings, though campsites fill quickly on summer weekends. Shoulder months of May, June, and September trade some warmth for lighter crowds and better campsite availability. Winter visits are possible but exposed, with cold rain, short daylight, and rough water that can strand visitors.

Things to do at James Island State Park

  • Bluff-Top Walking Trails Easy

James Island has about 1.5 miles of bluff-top walking paths that circle the developed portion of the island. The trails pass Douglas-fir forest and open to Rosario Strait viewpoints. Much of the interior is a protected Natural Forest Area and closed to entry. nps.gov/places/james-island-marine-state-park.htm

  • Boat-In Camping Moderate

The park offers 13 primitive campsites reached only by boat or kayak, with vault toilets and a water bottle-filling station. Sites are first-come, first-served, and summer weekends fill quickly. nps.gov/places/james-island-marine-state-park.htm

  • Sea Kayaking from Anacortes Strenuous
    RV parking available

Paddling from the mainland or from Decatur Island is the most common way to reach James Island. Rosario Strait has strong currents and boat traffic, so experienced paddlers and a checked tide table are essential.

  • Moorage and Day Anchoring

Visiting boaters can tie up at the park dock or pick up one of the mooring buoys for a day visit or overnight stay. Sandy coves on the east and west sides provide additional landing options for dinghies and kayaks. nps.gov/places/james-island-marine-state-park.htm

  • Wildlife and Bird Watching Easy

The island's undisturbed forest and rocky shoreline support bald eagles, harbor seals, river otters, and a variety of seabirds. Early mornings from the bluff trails offer the best viewing.

  • Beachcombing and Picnicking

Small sandy pocket beaches on either side of the island make good spots to land a kayak, stretch out, and picnic. Pack out all trash as there is no garbage service on the island.

  • Stargazing Easy

With no road access and minimal light pollution, James Island offers dark skies over Rosario Strait on clear nights. Bring warm layers even in summer, as marine air cools quickly after sunset.

This was our first time renting a trailer and it was awesome! Mark and his wife were lovely people and it was a pleasure meeting and communicating with them. We had everything we needed in the trailer and it worked perfectly for where we were with no hookups. Anytime we had questions, Mark was very quick to answer and explained everything about the trailer before they left. Thank you so much guys! :)

How to get to James Island State Park

There is no road or ferry to James Island, so RV travelers stage from the mainland. The closest launch points are in Anacortes, about 80 miles north of Seattle (roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by RV via I-5 and State Route 20), where boat ramps and kayak outfitters access Rosario Strait. RVs should watch for the steep approach and tight turns on SR 20 into Anacortes, and drivers towing trailers should plan fuel stops before the last stretch. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA), with Bellingham International (BLI) a closer regional alternative.
