Kiptopeke State Park, VA, United States
Kiptopeke sits about 3 miles north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel on U.S. Route 13, roughly 25 minutes from Cape Charles and about 45 minutes (35 miles) from Virginia Beach and Norfolk. RV drivers approaching from the south must cross the 17.6-mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, which has wind restrictions for high-profile vehicles and a per-axle toll structure, so check current restrictions before departure. From the north, the park is about 2.5 hours from Salisbury, Maryland via U.S. 13, a flat divided highway with no mountain grades. Norfolk International Airport (ORF) is the nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers, about 50 miles south.
Late spring through early fall, roughly May to October, is the most popular time, with warm bay water, long daylight hours, and full campground services. September and October are especially rewarding because the park sits on the Atlantic Flyway and hosts peak hawk and songbird migration. Summer weekends and holidays book up quickly, so shoulder months like May and early October offer cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and easier RV site availability. Winter is mild but quieter, with limited programming and brisk bay winds.
Cool and breezy; campground open with reduced services
Cold winds off the bay
Variable spring weather
Pleasant shoulder season
Hot, humid; book sites early
Peak season; afternoon thunderstorms possible
Hawk migration peaks
Excellent birding and mild weather
Quiet off-season
The park's half-mile sandy beach is the centerpiece for visitors. Calm bay water makes it suitable for swimming, wading, and shoreline walks, with paved parking close to the bathhouse.
Kiptopeke sits along a major flyway for migratory birds on the Chesapeake Bay. Each fall, staffed observation platforms and banding demonstrations let visitors watch raptors, songbirds, and monarch butterflies pass through the southern tip of Virginia's Eastern Shore.
Nine sunken WWII concrete ships sit just offshore as a breakwater and are visible from the beach and pier. The lighted fishing pier offers saltwater angling for spot, croaker, and flounder with RV-accessible parking nearby.
A network of short loop trails winds through coastal pine forest and dune habitat. Most paths are flat, sandy, and well-marked, suitable for casual hikers and birders.
Kayaks and canoes are available for rent at the park. Paddlers can launch from the boat ramp to explore the calm Chesapeake Bay shoreline and nearby coastal coves.
A multi-lane boat ramp provides direct access to the lower Chesapeake Bay for trailered boats. Anglers target striped bass, red drum, and Spanish mackerel in season.
Just south of the park, this refuge offers additional birding trails, a visitor center, and views over the bay and ocean. It is a short drive from the campground and a natural pairing for migration-season visits.
Nicholas was wonderful to work with. We felt very comfortable with his instructions. Definitely recommend him for your future camping adventures!!

Nicholas was excellent with communication. He gladly answered all my questions without hesitation. The camper REALLY has all you would need for camping, including hand soap, dish soap and body wash. He hooked it all up for us so when we got there all we had to do was unpack. There were 5 of us and I thought we would fit without issue, however, it was tight. But we did not spend much time in there so it was ok. I would (and likely will) definitely rent from Nicholas again. We had a great time.

Thomas and his wife were excellent host and I would recommend them to anyone looking to rent a RV. Throughout the entire process and rental they kept constant communication and were very helpful in ensuring that experience was a good one.
