Best time to visit Kopachuck State Park

Late spring through early fall, roughly May through September, offers the driest weather and the warmest beach days for day-use visits. July and August bring peak crowds, clear Olympic Mountain views, and the lowest daytime tides for beachcombing. Shoulder months like April, May, and October are quieter and pleasant for RV day trips, though rain is more frequent. Winter visits are possible since the park is open year-round for day use, but expect wet, cool conditions typical of the Puget Sound lowlands.

Things to do at Kopachuck State Park

  • Beachcombing on Henderson Bay Easy
    RV parking available

Walking the saltwater beach at low tide is the signature activity at Kopachuck State Park. Visitors find sand dollars, moon snails, sea stars, and other intertidal life along roughly a mile of gravel and cobble shoreline. Check tide tables before visiting to time the lowest exposure.

  • Picnicking and day use Easy
    RV parking available

Shaded picnic tables sit in the upland forest overlooking the water. The area works well for lunch breaks during a South Puget Sound RV day trip, with restrooms and a large parking lot.

  • Kayaking to Cutts Island Moderate
    RV parking available

Paddlers can launch from the Kopachuck beach and cross to Cutts Island Marine State Park, a small forested island about a half mile offshore. Currents and boat traffic can be strong, so this route suits intermediate kayakers with proper safety gear.

  • Shellfish harvesting Easy
    RV parking available

Seasonal clam and oyster harvesting is a popular draw when beaches are open and safe. Check current Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife rules and biotoxin closures before digging, and bring a valid shellfish license.

  • Scuba diving and snorkeling Strenuous
    RV parking available

Kopachuck is a known shore-dive site with an underwater artificial reef offshore. Experienced divers explore eelgrass, rockfish habitat, and invertebrate life in the protected waters of Henderson Bay.

  • Forest and shoreline walking Easy
    RV parking available

Short trails wind through the second-growth forest between the parking area and the beach. Expect gentle grades, interpretive signs about local ecology, and quiet views out over the water.

  • Olympic Mountain viewing and photography Easy
    RV parking available

On clear days the western horizon opens to views of the Olympic Mountains across Puget Sound. Sunset from the beach is a favorite scene for photographers visiting Gig Harbor peninsula parks.

We had such a great weekend camping in the Memory Maker! Danielle has thought of everything when it comes to making life easy while you are “roughing it”. We felt cozy and comfortable sleeping as a family of 5. It was easy to pull behind our Tahoe as well. Great experience all around, we already have our next trip booked!

How to get to Kopachuck State Park

Kopachuck State Park sits about 10 minutes and 6 miles west of Gig Harbor, roughly 20 miles and 30 to 45 minutes southwest of Tacoma via State Route 16, and about 60 miles from downtown Seattle depending on traffic across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Access is via narrow, winding rural roads through the Gig Harbor peninsula, so drivers of longer RVs should watch for tight curves, low tree canopy, and limited turnaround space in the day-use lot. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge carries a toll for eastbound traffic and has no special RV restrictions for standard recreational vehicles. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), about 40 miles northeast, is the nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips.
