October through April is the most comfortable window for RV travel, with mild temperatures, lower humidity, and far less mosquito activity than summer. Spring brings blooming wildflowers and active birdlife, while fall offers cooler paddling weather and colorful cypress foliage. Summer visits are possible but bring high heat, humidity, and heavy insect pressure, so plan for early-morning activities. Winter is usually mild and quiet, making it a strong shoulder season for snowbirds.

Kayaking and canoeing are the signature activities at Lake Fausse Pointe, with routes through moss-draped bald cypress and tupelo forest. The park has boat and canoe launches suitable for small watercraft, and paddlers can explore sheltered canals or head out to open water. Alligators, herons, egrets, and osprey are commonly seen.
Several short interpretive and nature trails loop through bottomland hardwood forest near the campground and visitor center. Trails are generally flat and shaded, making them suitable for most ability levels. Expect boardwalks over wet areas and strong insect activity in warm months.
The lake and surrounding canals are known for largemouth bass, bream, crappie, and catfish. Anglers can fish from the bank, piers, or small boats launched from the park ramp. A Louisiana fishing license is required for anyone age 16 and older.
The park is a prime spot for observing Atchafalaya Basin wildlife. Common sightings include alligators, turtles, wading birds, woodpeckers, and seasonal migratory waterfowl. Early morning and late afternoon from waterfront cabins, piers, or a kayak offer the best viewing.
The visitor center offers exhibits on the natural history of the Atchafalaya Basin and the cultural heritage of the Chitimacha and Acadian peoples who shaped the region. It is a useful first stop for maps, paddling advice, and ranger-led programming when available. Parking is generally RV-friendly.
The historic town of St. Martinville lies about 18 miles to the west and is a gateway to Acadian culture, including the Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site. Lafayette adds Cajun and zydeco music venues, Acadian cultural centers, and local cuisine. Leaving the RV at camp and exploring in a tow vehicle is recommended.
Day-use picnic areas and pavilions sit along the water with views of the cypress-studded lake. Sites are well-suited for families and group gatherings, with tables, grills, and nearby restrooms. Sunset over the lake is a highlight.
Great Host!

Derek was really easy to work with and very flexible on the pickup and return times. If we need to rent a camper again, I would definitely rent from him again.

Lake Fausse Pointe State Park, LA, United States
The park sits about 18 miles southeast of St. Martinville and roughly 35 miles from Lafayette, typically a 45 to 60 minute drive on rural two-lane roads. Baton Rouge is about 90 miles east, around two hours by road, and New Orleans is roughly three hours. Access roads include narrow shoulders, low-lying sections prone to flooding after heavy rain, and some single-lane bridges, so large rigs should drive cautiously and check conditions before arrival. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Lafayette Regional Airport (LFT), with Baton Rouge Metropolitan (BTR) and New Orleans Louis Armstrong (MSY) as larger alternatives.
