Spring, from March through May, is the most comfortable window for RV travel, with wildflowers, mild temperatures, and full-service campground operations. Early fall, from late September through November, brings cooler weather and lighter weekday crowds, which helps when maneuvering larger rigs into campsites. Summer is popular for swimming and paddling but temperatures frequently climb into the upper 90s, so shaded sites and working air conditioning are important. Winter stays are low-key and quiet, though occasional freezes and overnight lows near freezing can affect water hookups.
Cool, occasional freezes; winterize water hookups if temperatures drop.
Mild with cold snaps possible.
Pleasant spring conditions; wildflowers begin.
Peak spring season, book campsites early.

Comfortable temperatures, lighter crowds midweek.
Cool and dry, good hiking weather.
Quiet season; occasional freezes possible.
Penitentiary Hollow is a sandstone canyon area within the park that serves as a popular spot for rock climbing, bouldering, and rappelling. Routes range from beginner scrambles to technical climbs along the lake shoreline. Parking is available at the day-use lot near the trailhead. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-mineral-wells
The Lake Mineral Wells Trailway is a roughly 20-mile rail-trail connecting the park to Weatherford along a converted railroad grade. It is open to hikers, cyclists, and equestrians, with several trailheads along the route. The park trailhead has vehicle parking suitable for RVs and trailers. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-mineral-wells-trailway
The park offers a designated swimming beach on the 646-acre reservoir, with picnic tables and restrooms nearby. Shallow water entry makes it family-friendly during the hot summer months. Day-use parking is a short walk from the beach. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-mineral-wells
Anglers can fish from shoreline, piers, and boats for largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and sunfish. The park has a boat ramp and courtesy dock, and seasonal kayak and paddleboard rentals are typically available. Boat trailer parking is provided at the ramp. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-mineral-wells
The park's backcountry trail network winds through post oak and juniper woodland typical of the Cross Timbers ecoregion. Loops of varying lengths pass scenic overlooks and connect to primitive campsites for those who want to backpack from the trailhead. Trailhead parking accommodates standard vehicles and smaller RVs. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-mineral-wells
Mountain bikers can ride both the long rail-trail and designated singletrack loops within the park. Terrain is rolling with a mix of packed gravel on the trailway and more technical dirt on interior trails. Parking is available at the main trailhead. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-mineral-wells
Horseback riders have access to the rail-trail and a separate equestrian camping area within the park. Designated hitching posts and trailer parking serve riders bringing their own horses. Check park rules for required health documentation before arrival. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/lake-mineral-wells
This was our first time renting a RV. It drove like a truck or van, super easy! They were flexible on picking up as they stated. Our family really enjoyed being able to relax as we drove. We will definitely be renting from them again.

Lake Mineral Wells State Park & Trailway, TX, United States
From Fort Worth, the park is roughly 50 to 55 miles west via US-180, about a one-hour drive, and Dallas is closer to 90 miles, or about two hours. Abilene sits about 140 miles to the west on Interstate 20 and US-180. Most routes are standard highway driving without tunnels or steep mountain grades, but US-180 has some rolling hills and narrow two-lane sections west of Weatherford where RV drivers should watch for tight shoulders. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), about 75 miles east.
