Best time to visit Larrabee State Park

Late June through early September offers the warmest, driest weather, with daytime highs in the 70s F and long daylight hours ideal for beach walks and hikes. July and August are the busiest months, so reservations for RV sites fill quickly on weekends. Late spring (May) and early fall (September to mid-October) are excellent shoulder seasons for RV travel, with thinner crowds, mild temperatures, and vivid forest color. Winter visits are possible since the park stays open year-round, but expect frequent rain and cool, damp conditions.

Things to do at Larrabee State Park

  • Fragrance Lake Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

A popular 5.5-mile round-trip hike that climbs from the main park area to a quiet forested lake in the Chuckanut Mountains. The route gains about 1,050 feet through second-growth forest with a short side path to an overlook of Samish Bay. Trailhead parking accommodates vehicles, though RVers often park at the main day-use lot and cross Chuckanut Drive on foot.

  • Clayton Beach Easy

Clayton Beach is a sandy and cobble cove reached by a roughly 0.7-mile trail from the Clayton Beach trailhead south of the main park. It offers dramatic sandstone formations, driftwood, and views of the San Juan Islands at sunset. The trailhead has a paved lot with limited large-vehicle space.

  • Tidepooling at Wildcat Cove Easy
    RV parking available

Wildcat Cove, the park's main beach area, features excellent tidepools at low tide along with a boat launch and picnic spots. Visitors spot sea stars, anemones, crabs, and other intertidal life among the sandstone ledges. The day-use lot beside the beach handles standard RVs but can fill quickly on summer weekends.

  • Interurban Trail Easy
    RV parking available

The Interurban Trail is a gentle multi-use path that follows an old electric railway grade north toward Bellingham's Fairhaven district. It runs roughly 6 miles one way, is mostly level, and connects Larrabee with Arroyo Park and Fairhaven Park. Cyclists and walkers can access it directly from the Larrabee trailhead area.

  • Lost Lake Trail Strenuous
    RV parking available

Lost Lake Trail is a longer, more challenging route of about 8 miles round trip that climbs past Fragrance Lake to a remote forested lake on Chuckanut Ridge. Expect sustained elevation gain and some rugged sections beyond Fragrance Lake. Best suited for fit hikers looking for a quieter day away from the main park.

  • Boat Launch and Paddling on Samish Bay Easy
    RV parking available

Larrabee's concrete boat launch provides protected saltwater access to Samish Bay for kayaks, small boats, and paddleboards. Paddlers can explore nearby islets, sandstone cliffs, and kelp beds while watching for seals, bald eagles, and herons. The launch area has a paved lot suitable for vehicles with trailers.

  • Chuckanut Drive Scenic Byway Easy

Chuckanut Drive (SR 11) is a designated scenic byway that winds along sandstone bluffs above Samish Bay between Larrabee and the Skagit Valley farmlands. Pullouts offer panoramic views of the San Juan Islands and Olympic Mountains on clear days. Large RVs should drive cautiously due to narrow shoulders and tight curves.

The trailer was perfect for our family’s little camping weekend. It was stocked with everything we needed. Luther was quick to respond and answered all questions I had.

This was our first time renting a trailer, and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The trailer was in excellent condition, very clean, and had everything we needed for a comfortable and enjoyable trip. It was clear that it had been well maintained and thoughtfully equipped. Luther was fantastic to work with. He is extremely knowledgeable and took the time to answer all of our questions without hesitation. As first-time renters, we had plenty of questions, and he was always patient, helpful, and happy to share his expertise, which made us feel much more confident and comfortable. Overall, we had a great experience and were very satisfied with the rental. We would definitely rent from Luther again and highly recommend him to anyone looking for a hassle-free trailer rental experience.

Sam was great and very easy to deal with. Everything was as described- set up matched the photos. Everything was functioning as it is supposed to. Great hosts and would definitely rent from him for a 3rd time

Anthony M. - May 2026

Sam was a wonderful host. He really took the time to give us a proper walk through as we were first time trailer towers! He went above and beyond to ensure we were set up for success. Our truck didnt have proper suspension and he lent us a weight distributor so that we could drive with confidence, essentially saving our camping trip. Would book again and would recommend to anyone.

How to get to Larrabee State Park

The park sits on Chuckanut Drive (SR 11) about 20 minutes (roughly 7 miles) south of Bellingham and about 90 minutes (approximately 85 miles) north of Seattle via I-5. RV drivers should note that Chuckanut Drive is a narrow, winding two-lane coastal highway with tight curves, low shoulders, and some posted length advisories, so larger rigs often prefer approaching from I-5 exit 231 (Chuckanut Drive North) rather than the southern entry near Bow. There are no major tunnels or mountain passes on the direct route, but watch for steep grades and blind curves along SR 11. The nearest airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Bellingham International Airport (BLI), with Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA) as a larger option to the south.
