Late May through early October offers the most reliable RV conditions, with warm days, open campground loops, and full access to canyon roads. Fall brings vivid hardwood color in late September and October, along with thinner weekday crowds. Spring can be wet, and the low canyon road is prone to closure after heavy rain or Des Moines River flooding, so RV travelers should check conditions before arrival. Winter camping is limited and amenities are reduced.

The Canyon Road is a historic CCC-era route that descends from the upper park into Pea's Creek canyon between towering sandstone walls. It crosses several low-water fords and passes some of the park's most iconic scenery. Best driven in a passenger vehicle; large RVs should park at the upper lot and access on foot or by tow vehicle.
Table Rock and Crow's Nest are short hikes to classic sandstone overlooks with sweeping views of the Des Moines River valley. The trailheads have parking suitable for tow vehicles and smaller RVs in the upper park. Paths are wooded and moderate with some stairs and uneven footing.
Lost Lake Trail is a shaded loop through hardwood forest to a small pond tucked in the uplands. It is one of the easier walks in the park and suits families with young children. Trailhead parking near the picnic area accommodates tow vehicles.
A streamside walk through the sandstone canyon that gives Ledges its name. Hikers can follow the creek between 75-foot bluffs, with multiple crossings that can be wet in spring. Park at the lower canyon lots if conditions allow.
Pea's Creek is stocked with rainbow trout during the cool season, making it one of central Iowa's few trout streams. A valid Iowa fishing license and trout fee are required. Access points are reachable from the canyon road pull-offs.
Historic CCC-built stone shelters serve as day-use gathering spots near the upper park. Large paved lots accommodate RVs and tow vehicles for lunch stops between hikes. Drinking water and restrooms are available in season.
Short interpretive and connector trails radiate from the campground loops, including paths to the overlooks and picnic areas. These are ideal for campers who want to explore on foot without moving the RV. Expect rolling, wooded terrain.
We had a great time camping. Heather was great and very quick to respond with any questions I had. Camper was great and everything that was included with our trip. I would definitely be renting from them again.

Isa was great to work with on our leaf peeping and Niagra Falls trip. She was very responsive to questions we had while on the road. She even helped us jump start our vehicle when it wouldn't start after our return. The rig was easy to drive even in Chicago construction zones and Boston rush-hour traffic.

Ledges State Park, IA, United States
The park sits about 6 miles south of Boone via State Highway 164 and roughly 40 miles north of Des Moines, a drive of about 50 minutes from the metro. From Ames, it is approximately 20 miles west, about 30 minutes by vehicle. RV drivers should avoid the narrow lower canyon road inside the park with large rigs and use the upper entrance instead, and note that low-water fords on the canyon road are impassable when flooded. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Des Moines International Airport (DSM).
