Best time to visit Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park

Late May through early September is the best window for RV travel, when the cave tour season is in full operation and the campground is open with water service. July and August bring warm, dry weather ideal for camping, though tours can sell out mid-day, so morning arrivals are recommended. Shoulder months of May and September offer cooler temperatures, thinner crowds, and still-accessible tours on a reduced schedule. Winter visits are limited since the cave tours close and most campground services shut down.

Things to do at Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park

  • Classic Cave Tour Moderate
    RV parking available

The Classic Tour is a ranger-guided walk through the park's signature limestone cavern system, featuring dripstone formations, columns, and narrow passages. The route includes roughly 600 stairs and tight spaces, and lasts about two hours. Tours operate seasonally from spring through early fall.

  • Paradise Cave Tour Easy
    RV parking available

This introductory walking tour visits a separate, more accessible section of the cave with fewer stairs and wider passages. It is a good option for families or visitors who want to see cave formations without the exertion of the Classic Tour. Offered on a limited schedule during the main season.

  • Visitor Center and Exhibits Easy
    RV parking available

The visitor center offers interpretive displays on cave geology, regional wildlife, and Lewis and Clark Expedition history. It also serves as the meeting point for guided cave tours. RV parking is available at the lower day-use lot with shuttle or trail access.

  • Cave Trail Hike Moderate
    RV parking available

The Cave Trail climbs from the visitor center area up to the cave entrance through sagebrush and Douglas fir forest. The route offers sweeping views of the Jefferson River valley and Tobacco Root Mountains. Expect a steady uphill grade over roughly three-quarters of a mile.

  • Campground Loop Walks Easy
    RV parking available

Short interpretive and connector trails wind through the campground area and nearby hillsides. These easy walks are ideal for evening strolls and wildlife viewing, with mule deer and marmots frequently spotted. Trailheads are steps from most RV sites.

  • Wildlife and Bird Watching Easy
    RV parking available

The park's mix of riparian corridor, sagebrush steppe, and limestone cliffs attracts bighorn sheep, mule deer, marmots, and numerous raptors and songbirds. Early morning and evening near the campground and along the entry road offer the best viewing. Binoculars are recommended.

  • Jefferson River Valley Scenic Drive Easy
    RV parking available

The drive along Montana Highway 2 between Whitehall and Three Forks follows the Jefferson River with views of limestone cliffs and ranchland. It makes a scenic approach to the park and connects to other Lewis and Clark Expedition interpretive sites. Pullouts accommodate most RVs.

How to get to Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park

The park is located off Montana Highway 2, roughly halfway between Whitehall and Three Forks, with access from Interstate 90 at either end. From Bozeman it is about a 50-mile, one-hour drive west, and from Butte roughly 50 miles east. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN). RV drivers should note that the road up to the visitor center and cave entrance is steep and winding with tight switchbacks, so large rigs and towables are best left at the campground or lower day-use lot, where a shuttle or walk-up option is typical.
