The most comfortable months to visit are typically late November through April, when humidity is lower, mosquitoes are minimal, and daytime highs sit in the 70s F to low 80s F. Winter is peak season, so oceanfront campsites book up far in advance and reservations are essential. Shoulder months such as May and early November offer warmer water and thinner crowds, while June through October brings high heat, heavy rain, strong mosquitoes, and active hurricane season, which RV travelers should monitor closely.

The Golden Orb Trail is the park's signature nature walk, a roughly 1.1 mile loop winding through coastal berm, mangrove, and tropical hammock habitats. Interpretive signs highlight native plants and the park's shoreline ecology. The trailhead has paved parking suitable for tow vehicles and smaller RVs.
The Layton Trail is a short, flat interpretive walk on the bay side of U.S. 1, about a quarter mile long through hardwood hammock. It offers a quick leg-stretch stop for RVers passing through the Keys. Parking is limited to a small roadside pull-off.
Paddlers can launch from the park's designated canoe and kayak area into a sheltered tidal lagoon and seagrass flats. The calm, shallow water is well suited for beginners and for spotting wading birds, rays, and juvenile reef fish. Rentals are typically available on-site or in nearby Layton and Islamorada.
The park's oceanfront shoreline offers wade-in access to shallow seagrass flats where visitors can snorkel directly from the beach. Expect to see sponges, small reef fish, sea stars, and occasionally nurse sharks or rays. Water shoes are recommended because of rocky patches and turtle grass.
Long Key is well known for shallow-water flats fishing for bonefish, tarpon, permit, and snapper. Anglers can wade from shore, launch kayaks, or hire guides based in nearby Islamorada. A current Florida saltwater fishing license is required for most anglers.
Day-use picnic areas sit directly on the Atlantic shoreline with tables, grills, and pavilions shaded by native trees. The narrow beach is popular for sunrise walks and shelling along the wrack line. Restrooms and outdoor rinse showers are available near the picnic area.
A segment of the paved Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail runs near the park, offering flat, traffic-separated cycling along the Overseas Highway. Riders can connect north toward Islamorada or south toward Marathon for longer routes. Bikes can be unloaded from RVs at the park's day-use parking.

Long Key State Park, FL, United States
Long Key State Park sits along U.S. Highway 1 (the Overseas Highway) in the middle Keys, about a 2 hour drive (roughly 100 miles) south of Miami and about 1.5 hours (around 70 miles) northeast of Key West. The closest major airports for fly-and-rent RV trips are Miami International and Key West International, with Fort Lauderdale also within easy reach. RV drivers should plan for the Overseas Highway's many low bridges, narrow shoulders, and steady crosswinds over open water, and note that the Seven Mile Bridge south of the park has posted weight and size limits for oversized vehicles. There are no tunnels or steep grades, but traffic slows sharply on weekends and during peak season.
