Late April through June and September into mid-October are the most comfortable windows, with mild temperatures, lower humidity, and active wildlife. July and August bring warm, humid weather that is ideal for swimming and paddling but can feel muggy for hiking. The campground typically operates from spring through late fall, so shoulder-season RV trips often mean quieter loops and easier weekend reservations. Winter is cold and quiet, with day-use access but limited camping services.

The Swamp Forest Trail is a roughly 7-mile loop that circles Lums Pond through mixed hardwood forest and wetland. It is the park's signature hike and is also open to mountain bikes on designated sections. Trailhead parking near the day-use area accommodates vehicles with trailers.
Lums Pond offers warm-water fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, catfish, and pickerel from shore, pier, or boat. A Delaware fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older. Boat rentals and a launch ramp are available at the park marina.
Go Ape operates an aerial adventure and zipline course inside the park with rope bridges, Tarzan swings, and long ziplines over the forest canopy. Advance reservations are recommended during peak season. Parking is in the main day-use lot.
Lums Pond features an 18-hole disc golf course set through rolling woods near the campground. The layout is popular with beginners and experienced players alike. Discs can often be rented or purchased at the park office.
Lums Pond is a calm, no-wake freshwater pond ideal for kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding. Seasonal boat rentals are offered at the park marina on the north side of the pond. Personal craft can be launched from the ramp.
The Whale Wallow Nature Center offers exhibits on local wildlife, wetlands, and the history of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. Rangers run seasonal interpretive programs suitable for families. The center is a short walk from the day-use parking area.
Lums Pond has a network of singletrack and multi-use trails popular with local mountain bikers, including technical sections built by regional trail clubs. Riders share the Swamp Forest Trail with hikers, so yielding etiquette is important. Parking with room for tow vehicles is available at the main trailheads.
The park includes a fenced, off-leash dog park with separate areas for small and large dogs. It is a convenient stop for RV travelers camping with pets. Parking is adjacent to the entrance.

Lums Pond State Park, DE, United States
Lums Pond sits just off U.S. Route 301 and Delaware Route 71 near Kirkwood, about 15 minutes south of Newark and roughly 45 minutes from downtown Wilmington. From Philadelphia the drive is about one hour via I-95 and US-301, and Baltimore is around 75 minutes west on US-40 and MD-213. RV drivers should note toll booths on US-301 in Delaware and Maryland, and the nearby Chesapeake and Delaware Canal bridges, which are high and exposed to crosswinds. Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent trips, with Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) as an alternative.
