Winter visits are quieter, though water access is closed from November through January to protect overwintering waterfowl. The interpretive pavilion is an open-air installation that introduces visitors to Virginia's Indigenous history. It follows a timeline from the first arrival of people in North America to the formation of Tribal groups whose descendants still live in Virginia today. A short gravel loop circles the pavilion for easy access from the day-use area. nps.gov/places/machicomoco-state-park.htm
The park's main path is a paved loop suitable for walking, running, and cycling. The park has a 3.3 mile paved trail for walking and biking, a .7 mile gravel trail around the interpretive area, and a natural trail that runs 2.4 miles. Paved surfaces make it friendly for families and casual riders. nps.gov/places/machicomoco-state-park.htm

The car-top launch offers paddlers access to Poplar Creek and the broader York River. Access to the Catlett Islands and accompanying marsh areas is prohibited due to the sensitive nature of the resources, and motorized boats and boats launched from trailers are not permitted to use this access. Kayaks and canoes are the ideal way to explore. nps.gov/places/machicomoco-state-park.htm
Anglers can cast from designated floating slips along Timberneck Creek. Fishing is permitted at the floating slips located on Timberneck Creek, and a valid Virginia saltwater license is required from the Virginia Department of Marine Resources. Target species include striped bass, croaker, and spot in season. nps.gov/places/machicomoco-state-park.htm
Timberneck is a late 18th-century house on the park grounds. The park is the site of Timberneck, a circa 1793 house that was part of the larger Rosewell Plantation, and the site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and being restored for future use as an education and lodging building. Interpretive signage covers its colonial and plantation-era history. nps.gov/places/machicomoco-state-park.htm
The York River shoreline and adjacent marshes support strong birdlife, particularly in cooler months. Water access is closed from Nov. 1 through Jan. 31 to protect migratory waterfowl that use the area for overwintering. Bring binoculars for views from the shore and trails.
Nicholas was wonderful to work with. We felt very comfortable with his instructions. Definitely recommend him for your future camping adventures!!

Nicholas was excellent with communication. He gladly answered all my questions without hesitation. The camper REALLY has all you would need for camping, including hand soap, dish soap and body wash. He hooked it all up for us so when we got there all we had to do was unpack. There were 5 of us and I thought we would fit without issue, however, it was tight. But we did not spend much time in there so it was ok. I would (and likely will) definitely rent from Nicholas again. We had a great time.

Machicomoco State Park, VA, United States
The park is in Gloucester County, Virginia, roughly 20 miles north of Williamsburg and about 60 miles east of Richmond via I-64 and US-17. Drivers from Newport News cross the Coleman Memorial Bridge over the York River, which carries a toll for northbound traffic and has lane restrictions RV drivers should review in advance. Coastal Virginia has no mountain passes, but low-clearance bridges and drawbridges on secondary routes can be a concern for taller rigs. The nearest airports for fly-and-rent trips are Newport News/Williamsburg International (PHF) and Norfolk International (ORF).
