Best time to visit Manatee Springs State Park

Late fall through early spring, roughly November to March, is the most comfortable window for RV travel, with cooler days, lower humidity, and fewer biting insects. Winter is also the best time to see manatees, which move into the warm spring from the Suwannee River when river temperatures drop. Spring and fall are pleasant shoulder seasons with warm water for swimming. Summer brings heat, afternoon thunderstorms, heavy mosquito activity, and higher river levels that can temporarily cloud or close the spring.

Things to do at Manatee Springs State Park

  • Swim and snorkel in the spring Easy
    RV parking available

Swimming in the main spring basin is the park's signature activity, with constant 72 degree water year round. A concrete deck, steps, and sandy edges make entry easy for most visitors. Snorkelers can see fish, eelgrass, and the spring vent.

  • Manatee Springs Boardwalk Easy
    RV parking available

The elevated boardwalk runs roughly a quarter mile from the spring to the Suwannee River through a cypress and tupelo floodplain. It is flat, shaded, and wheelchair accessible, with interpretive signs and a river viewing platform at the end. In winter, manatees are often visible below the boardwalk.

  • Paddle the spring run and Suwannee River Easy
    RV parking available

Paddlers can launch canoes and kayaks into the spring run and drift down to the Suwannee River. Rentals are typically available in the park. The run is short, shaded, and scenic, making it suitable for beginners.

  • North End Trail hiking and biking Moderate
    RV parking available

A network of multi-use trails winds through pine flatwoods and sandhill habitat on the north side of the park. Hikers, bikers, and equestrians share the routes, which total several miles of loops. Watch for gopher tortoises and white-tailed deer.

  • Manatee viewing in winter Easy
    RV parking available

From late fall through early spring, West Indian manatees move from the Suwannee River into the warm spring, and the boardwalk offers some of the best free viewing in north Florida. Peak numbers typically appear during cold snaps in December, January, and February. Swimming may be restricted in areas where manatees are present.

  • Cave and spring scuba diving Strenuous
    RV parking available

Certified cave divers can explore the Catfish Hotel sink and the Manatee Springs cave system, one of Florida's well known underwater cave networks. Open water diving is not permitted in the main spring basin. All divers must register at the entrance station and meet certification requirements.

  • Fishing on the Suwannee River Easy
    RV parking available

Anglers can fish the Suwannee from the river dock at the end of the boardwalk or from small boats launched at the park. Species include largemouth bass, bream, catfish, and seasonal mullet. A valid Florida freshwater fishing license is required.

  • Wildlife viewing and birding Easy
    RV parking available

The mix of spring run, river, floodplain forest, and pine flatwoods supports a diverse bird and wildlife population. Look for barred owls, pileated woodpeckers, wading birds, turtles, and the occasional alligator. Early morning along the boardwalk is the most productive time.

Our first time renting an RV and we didn’t know what to expect. Delivery of the RV was prompt and Big Jeff set everything up for us. Many of the items we brought were already there for use which was really great. I’m particular about our pillows and towels so we brought those along with our toiletries but everything else was there! Fantastic experience and great service with the delivery, setup and tear down. Would highly recommend.
