Late fall through early spring, roughly November to March, is the most comfortable window for RV travel, with cooler days, lower humidity, and fewer biting insects. Winter is also the best time to see manatees, which move into the warm spring from the Suwannee River when river temperatures drop. Spring and fall are pleasant shoulder seasons with warm water for swimming. Summer brings heat, afternoon thunderstorms, heavy mosquito activity, and higher river levels that can temporarily cloud or close the spring.
Peak manatee viewing season; cool mornings, mild afternoons.
Good paddling and camping weather; manatees still present.
Mild spring weather, rising demand for campsites.
Warm and dry; pleasant for hiking the boardwalk.
Heat and humidity climbing; swimming season begins in earnest.
Hot, humid, daily thunderstorms possible.
Peak heat, mosquitoes active; plan early morning activities.
Afternoon storms common; watch for tropical systems.
Hurricane season peak; high Suwannee River levels can cloud the spring.
Cooling and drier; excellent shoulder season for RVers.
Cool, dry; manatees begin returning to the spring.
Prime manatee viewing; holiday campsite demand is high.
Swimming in the main spring basin is the park's signature activity, with constant 72 degree water year round. A concrete deck, steps, and sandy edges make entry easy for most visitors. Snorkelers can see fish, eelgrass, and the spring vent.
The elevated boardwalk runs roughly a quarter mile from the spring to the Suwannee River through a cypress and tupelo floodplain. It is flat, shaded, and wheelchair accessible, with interpretive signs and a river viewing platform at the end. In winter, manatees are often visible below the boardwalk.
Paddlers can launch canoes and kayaks into the spring run and drift down to the Suwannee River. Rentals are typically available in the park. The run is short, shaded, and scenic, making it suitable for beginners.
A network of multi-use trails winds through pine flatwoods and sandhill habitat on the north side of the park. Hikers, bikers, and equestrians share the routes, which total several miles of loops. Watch for gopher tortoises and white-tailed deer.
From late fall through early spring, West Indian manatees move from the Suwannee River into the warm spring, and the boardwalk offers some of the best free viewing in north Florida. Peak numbers typically appear during cold snaps in December, January, and February. Swimming may be restricted in areas where manatees are present.
Certified cave divers can explore the Catfish Hotel sink and the Manatee Springs cave system, one of Florida's well known underwater cave networks. Open water diving is not permitted in the main spring basin. All divers must register at the entrance station and meet certification requirements.
Anglers can fish the Suwannee from the river dock at the end of the boardwalk or from small boats launched at the park. Species include largemouth bass, bream, catfish, and seasonal mullet. A valid Florida freshwater fishing license is required.
The mix of spring run, river, floodplain forest, and pine flatwoods supports a diverse bird and wildlife population. Look for barred owls, pileated woodpeckers, wading birds, turtles, and the occasional alligator. Early morning along the boardwalk is the most productive time.
Our first time renting an RV and we didn’t know what to expect. Delivery of the RV was prompt and Big Jeff set everything up for us. Many of the items we brought were already there for use which was really great. I’m particular about our pillows and towels so we brought those along with our toiletries but everything else was there! Fantastic experience and great service with the delivery, setup and tear down. Would highly recommend.

Manatee Springs State Park, FL, United States
The park sits about 6 miles west of Chiefland on SR 320, roughly a 45 minute drive from Gainesville, 2 hours from Jacksonville, and about 2 hours 15 minutes from both Tampa and Tallahassee. RV drivers should use US 19 and SR 320, which are flat, paved, and free of tunnels or steep grades, though the final miles pass through rural two lane sections with low hanging tree branches in places. Gainesville Regional Airport is the closest commercial airport for fly and rent trips, with Jacksonville, Tampa, and Orlando as larger alternatives. Confirm site length before arrival, as the interior campground loops include tight turns and mature oak canopy.
