Best time to visit Matanuska Glacier Recreation Site

Late May through early September offers the most reliable weather, long daylight hours, and fully open Glenn Highway access for RV travel. July and August bring the warmest temperatures and the best conditions for guided glacier treks, though they also draw the heaviest visitor traffic. Early June and early September are good shoulder-season windows with fewer crowds, though overnight temperatures can drop near freezing. Winter travel is possible but requires full cold-weather preparation and awareness of icy mountain grades.

    RV parking available

The Glenn Highway is a designated National Scenic Byway, and the stretch through the recreation site is among the most scenic in Alaska. How to get to Matanuska Glacier Recreation Site

The recreation site lies at about Mile 101 of the Glenn Highway (AK-1), roughly a two-hour drive northeast of Anchorage and about 60 miles east of Palmer. RVers should prepare for long sustained grades, winding curves, and limited pullouts as the highway climbs through the Chugach and Talkeetna ranges, with weather-related closures possible in shoulder seasons. There are no tunnels on the route, but cross-winds, frost heaves, and limited fuel stops between Palmer and Glennallen make trip planning important. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC).
