Matanuska Glacier State Recreation Site offers an exceptional RV camping and outdoor experience in Alaska's scenic Matanuska Valley. Located at Mile 101 on the Glenn Highway National Scenic Byway, this 229-acre state recreation area features six campsites and provides scenic access to one of Alaska's most iconic tidewater glaciers.
The recreation site offers complete camping amenities including accessible toilets, water hookups, propane availability, grills, picnic tables, and eight picnic areas distributed throughout the property. A gravel loop road and designated trails wind through the area, with fire pits available at each site. The interpretive Edge Nature Trail provides a 20-minute accessible walk through alpine forest to dedicated glacier viewing platforms—offering some of Alaska's best public viewing opportunities of the Matanuska Glacier.
Summer activities include camping, hiking along designated trails, glacier viewing, and nearby river rafting opportunities. Winter visitors enjoy skiing, snowshoeing, and snow machine access. ADA-accessible facilities ensure visitors of all abilities can experience this stunning glacial landscape.
The recreation area operates seasonally, closing during winter snow and ice conditions.
