Late April through early June and September through mid-October offer the most comfortable conditions for RV travel, with mild days, cooler nights, and fewer storms than midsummer. July and August bring strong High Plains heat, afternoon thunderstorms, and peak holiday weekend crowds, so reservations are recommended. Winter visits are possible but can bring hard freezes and occasional snow, and seasonal water service at campsites may be shut off.

The spring-fed lake at Meade State Park is the centerpiece of the park and is stocked for warm-water fishing. Anglers commonly target largemouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill, crappie, and saugeye from shoreline spots, a fishing dock, and small boats. A Kansas fishing license is required for anglers age 16 and older.
The lake allows boating with a no-wake restriction, making it well suited to kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and small fishing boats. A concrete boat ramp provides easy launch access and there is parking near the ramp for tow vehicles. Calm mornings are the best time to paddle.
A designated swim area on the lake gives RV campers a place to cool off during hot High Plains summers. The beach is unlifeguarded, so visitors swim at their own risk. Shaded picnic tables nearby make it a practical lunch stop between activities.
A short nature trail loops near the shoreline and through cottonwood groves, offering easy walking for RV travelers stretching their legs. The trail is relatively flat and suitable for most fitness levels. Spring and fall bring songbirds and migrating waterfowl to the lake.
The park's prairie-and-water setting draws herons, ducks, wild turkeys, and white-tailed deer, plus seasonal migrants. Early morning and dusk are the most productive times to observe wildlife from the campground or picnic areas. Binoculars are recommended.
Shaded picnic areas with tables and grills are scattered along the lakeshore and near the beach. Day-use parking is generous and can accommodate RVs stopping mid-route. Shelters provide welcome shade in summer heat.
Meade State Park's remote southwest Kansas location means very limited light pollution and expansive dark skies. Clear, dry nights on the High Plains make for excellent casual stargazing right from a campsite. Bring a blanket or camp chair and look for the Milky Way on moonless summer nights.

Meade State Park, KS, United States
The park sits about 13 miles southwest of the town of Meade via K-23 Highway, roughly 60 miles (about 1 hour 15 minutes) southwest of Dodge City and about 90 miles (about 1 hour 45 minutes) northeast of Guymon, Oklahoma. Access is via flat, straight plains highways with no mountain passes, tunnels, or significant grades, making the route RV-friendly, though sustained crosswinds are common and drivers of high-profile rigs should plan for gusty days. The final approach road into the park is paved but narrow in places, so larger rigs should take turns slowly. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent trips is Dodge City Regional Airport (DDC), with Amarillo (AMA) and Wichita (ICT) offering more flight options within a half-day drive.
