June and early September offer cooler temperatures and lighter crowds, making them ideal for photography of the rock art panels. Summer afternoons can bring thunderstorms in the canyon, so early starts are recommended. Late fall through early spring brings cold temperatures, possible snow, and limited services.

Things to do at Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site

  • Rock Art Cliff Viewing Easy
    RV parking available

The park's main attraction is a tall sandstone cliff bearing hundreds of petroglyphs and pictographs created by Indigenous peoples over several millennia. A short, mostly level interpretive walk leads from the parking area to the panels, with signs explaining the imagery and archaeology.

  • Medicine Lodge Creek Fishing Easy
    RV parking available

Medicine Lodge Creek runs through the park and offers fishing for trout in a quiet canyon-bottom setting. Anglers need a current Wyoming fishing license, and the creek is most productive in early summer after runoff settles.

  • Visitor Center and Archaeological Exhibits Easy
    RV parking available

The on-site visitor center interprets the stratified dig that documented thousands of years of human occupation at the site. Exhibits include artifacts and information on the cultures that left the surrounding rock art.

  • Lone Tree Trail to Paint Rock Canyon Strenuous

Adventurous visitors can access BLM lands and the dramatic Paint Rock Canyon area from a trailhead reached by driving Cold Springs Road. To reach the Lone Tree Trailhead, travel the Cold Springs Road from Medicine Lodge State Park for approximately 7 miles and turn onto the signed two-track. The road is rough, and high-clearance vehicles are recommended; leave the RV at the campground. blm.gov/press-release/blm-announces-change-paint-rock-canyon-access

  • Wildlife Viewing in Medicine Lodge Canyon Easy
    RV parking available

The canyon and surrounding wildlife habitat management area support a variety of species. The area includes crucial winter range for elk and deer, and bighorn sheep may use parts of it as summer range. Early morning and evening from pullouts along the access roads provide the best chances of sightings. blm.gov/visit/medicine-lodge-wsa

  • Scenic Drive on Red Gulch/Alkali Backcountry Byway Easy

The nearby Red Gulch/Alkali National Backcountry Byway loops through the foothills of the Bighorns with badlands, dinosaur tracks, and big-sky scenery. Portions are gravel, and conditions can be poor when wet, so smaller tow vehicles work better than large motorhomes.

  • Photography of Medicine Lodge Canyon Easy
    RV parking available

The park's setting offers dramatic scenery for photographers, with vertical cliffs, spires, and varied vegetation visible right from the campground. Early and late light brings out the warm tones of the canyon walls. blm.gov/programs/national-conservation-lands/wyoming/medicine-lodge-wsa
