June and September offer mild weather and lighter weekend traffic, while July and August bring the warmest swimming conditions and the busiest holiday weekends. Spring shoulder visits can be muddy on the bluff-top stairs after rain, and late fall brings cool nights with limited services as the park transitions to day-use only.

  • Mill Bluff Summit Stairway Strenuous

  • Bluff viewing and photography Easy
    RV parking available

Several pull-offs and short paths give close-up views of Mill Bluff, Devils Monument, Cleopatra's Needle, and Camels Bluff. Some are pinnacles in the sense of being a tall, slender, pointed mass, while more resemble the buttes of western United States.

  • Swimming pond and beach Easy
    RV parking available

A small spring-fed swimming pond with a sand beach offers a cool break on hot summer afternoons. The day-use area includes picnic tables and shaded grass, making it a convenient stop for families camping at the park.

  • Picnic area and shelter Easy
    RV parking available

Shaded picnic grounds near the bluffs provide tables, grills, and easy parking for day-trippers and campers. The setting puts diners directly beneath the sandstone towers for a memorable lunch stop.

  • Nature and interpretive trails Easy

Short, mostly level paths weave between the bluffs and through pine and oak woods at the base. Interpretive signs explain the geology of the Ice Age National Scientific Reserve and the role of glacial Lake Wisconsin in shaping the landscape.

  • Rustic campground stay Easy
    RV parking available

The park's small family campground offers wooded, rustic sites with vault toilets and hand-pump water but no electric or sewer hookups. It is a quiet base for exploring the bluffs and the wider Ice Age Trail corridor.

  • Ice Age National Scenic Trail access Moderate
    RV parking available

Mill Bluff is a designated unit of the Ice Age National Scientific Reserve and connects visitors to the broader Ice Age Trail system. The Ice Age National Scenic Trail spans 1,200 miles, traverses some of Wisconsin's finest geologic and glacial features, and passes through the ancestral lands of 15 Tribes. nps.gov/iatr/index.htm

How to get to Mill Bluff State Park

The park sits just off I-90/94 near Camp Douglas, roughly a 90-minute drive (about 90 miles) northwest of Madison and about 25 minutes (around 20 miles) east of Tomah. From the Wisconsin Dells, plan on roughly 30 miles west on the interstate. The route is flat with no tunnels or steep grades, making it straightforward for larger rigs, though interior park roads are narrow and some campsite spurs are short, so longer trailers should scout sites before backing in. The closest commercial airports for fly-and-rent trips are La Crosse Regional and Dane County Regional in Madison.
