Late spring through early fall, roughly May to October, is the most comfortable window for RV travel, with open campgrounds, warm days, and full access to trails and boat ramps. September and October are particularly rewarding for fall color along the bluffs and cooler hiking weather with fewer bugs. Shoulder-season travelers in April and November should expect muddy trails, variable temperatures, and reduced services. Winter visits are possible for day use, but snow and ice can make bluff-top trails and some interior park roads unsafe.

Sentinel and Lookout Point are cliff-top overlooks on the south end of the park with sweeping views of the Mississippi River and its forested islands. Both are reached on short to moderate trails from parking areas along the main park road.
The north end of the park offers a network of more rugged trails through ravines, rock formations, and hardwood forest. Trailheads at the campground and north park road let hikers link loops of several miles.
A boat ramp near the south entrance provides direct access to the Mississippi River for powerboats, kayaks, and anglers. Common catches include walleye, catfish, bass, and panfish from backwater sloughs.
The bluffs and river corridor are a prime winter and early spring bald eagle viewing area, with additional chances to spot deer, wild turkey, and migrating songbirds. River overlooks and pull-offs along the park road are the easiest vantage points.
Shaded picnic areas with tables, grills, and shelters sit near major overlooks and parking areas, making them convenient lunch stops between hikes. Several shelters can be reserved in advance through Illinois DNR.
The park is minutes from Savanna, Illinois, a small river town along the Great River Road National Scenic Byway. RV travelers can stock up on supplies, visit local cafes, and continue scenic driving along the Mississippi in either direction.
The park protects limestone and dolomite formations including spires, arches, and small caves formed by erosion over millions of years. Several formations are visible from marked trails in the central and southern sections.
We had an excellent experience in Josh’s camper. Both Josh and RV easy were a pleasure to deal with and kept in Prompt communication. Both Josh and RV easy were a pleasure to deal with. The camper was delivered as promised and picked up on time. The camper was as advertised with all the creature comforts of home. We will definitely be looking for Josh’s trailer through RVezy for the Labor Day camping trip next year. 10 out of 10!

Mississippi Palisades State Park, IL, United States
The park sits about 3 miles north of Savanna, Illinois on Route 84, roughly a 2.5 to 3 hour drive from Chicago (about 160 miles east) and around 1.5 hours from the Quad Cities to the south. RV drivers should note narrow, winding interior park roads with steep grades and tight switchbacks climbing from the river level to the bluff tops, and large rigs should stick to the main campground access roads rather than the scenic drives. The closest commercial airports for fly-and-rent travelers are Dubuque Regional Airport (about 40 miles north) and Quad City International Airport in Moline (about 65 miles south). Watch for seasonal flood detours on low-lying sections of Route 84 along the Mississippi River.
