Apple River Canyon State Park sits in the rugged northwest corner of Illinois in Jo Daviess County, near the Wisconsin border, where limestone bluffs, deep ravines, springs, and streams create a striking natural backdrop. Established in 1932, this 1,907-acre park offers a true outdoor escape along the banks of the Apple River. The Canyon Ridge Campground features spacious, well-spaced sites nestled among trees, each equipped with a picnic table and fire grill. The campground accommodates big rigs and offers pull-through sites, water hookups, and a dump station, making it a convenient base for RV travelers. Pit toilets and multiple water access points are available throughout, and pets are welcome at all campsites. Five scenic trails—Pine Ridge, Tower Rock, River Route, Sunset, and the accessible Primrose Trail—wind through the park's forested terrain, offering excellent hiking for all skill levels. Anglers can cast for smallmouth bass, sunfish, crappie, carp, and suckers in the Apple River. Four picnic areas along the riverbanks provide tables and grills for family gatherings, while a playground and available firewood round out the experience.
