Late spring through early fall, roughly May through October, is the best window to visit. Summer brings warm temperatures and full access to trails and picnic shelters, while September and October deliver cooler hiking weather and colorful hardwood foliage from the oak and maple canopy. Spring shoulder season can be muddy on the trails but offers wildflowers and lighter crowds. Winter access is limited, with unplowed roads and no maintained winter recreation.

A stone observation tower stands at the summit of Belmont Mound and is the park's signature attraction. On clear days visitors can see ridges and farmland stretching across parts of Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa.
Short wooded footpaths climb from the picnic area to the top of the mound through mature oak and hickory forest. The grades are moderate and the full loop can be walked in under an hour.
Open grassy picnic grounds with tables and reservable shelters sit near the base of the mound. The area suits a midday cookout during a driving tour of southwest Wisconsin.
The wooded slopes of the mound support white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and a variety of songbirds. Spring and fall migrations are especially productive for birders.
The First Capitol Historic Site is a short drive away and preserves the 1836 buildings where Wisconsin's territorial legislature first met. It pairs well with a stop at Belmont Mound for a history-focused day trip.
The rolling Driftless Area roads around the park are especially scenic in October when the hardwood forests turn red and gold. The summit tower offers a wide view of the color from above.

Belmont Mound State Park, WI, United States
The park sits just off County Highway G near Belmont, Wisconsin, about 15 minutes north of Platteville and roughly an hour and 15 minutes southwest of Madison via US-151. Dubuque, Iowa is about a 45-minute drive to the southwest. RV drivers should note that US-151 is a wide, modern four-lane corridor with no tunnels or major grades, but the final approach on rural county roads is narrow and rolls through Driftless Area hills, so take the curves slowly. The closest commercial airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Dane County Regional Airport in Madison.
