Late May through early October is the most popular window, with warm days suited to swimming, paddling, and fishing. June and September are good shoulder periods for RV travel, offering cooler nights, fewer bugs, and easier campsite availability than the July and August peak. Fall brings colorful hardwood foliage across the Driftless hills, usually in early to mid October. Winter visits are possible for day use and winter camping, but expect snow, icy roads, and reduced services.

Yellowstone Lake is a quiet impoundment stocked and managed for warmwater species including largemouth bass, walleye, northern pike, and panfish. Anglers fish from shore, the boat launch area, and small boats or kayaks. A Wisconsin fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older.
Paddlers enjoy calm water with limited motor activity, making the lake well suited to kayaks, canoes, and small fishing boats. Launches and parking areas serve trailered boats as well as car-top craft. Strong winds can pick up on open stretches, so check conditions before heading out.
The park operates a designated swimming beach on the lake during the summer season. The beach is unguarded and typically includes a picnic area and vault toilets nearby. It is a popular stop for families camping in the park.
Yellowstone Lake State Park offers a network of multi-use trails that wind through woodlands, prairie restorations, and along the lakeshore. Loops range from short nature walks to longer routes with rolling terrain typical of the Driftless Area. Trails are shared with cross-country skiers and snowshoers in winter.
Designated sections of the trail system are open to mountain bikers and horseback riders. Riders should check posted trail maps to confirm which loops allow bikes or horses. Trailhead parking accommodates vehicles with trailers.
The mix of prairie, woodland, wetland, and lakeshore habitats attracts a diverse range of wildlife. Visitors commonly spot white-tailed deer, wild turkey, ducks, geese, herons, and a variety of songbirds, with bald eagles occasionally seen near the lake. Early morning and evening are the best viewing times.
Several picnic areas with tables, grills, and shelters overlook the lake and surrounding landscape. Shelters can be reserved in advance through the Wisconsin State Park System. Day-use parking areas accommodate larger vehicles.
In winter the park's trails are used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when snow cover allows. Designated ski trails are groomed as conditions permit. Day-use facilities remain accessible while the main campground is closed for the season.
Ross was great to work with & the experience exceeded our expectations! He was very accommodating with pick up- we live out of state and ran into unexpected delays on our way to pick up. The rental was very clean, came stocked with anything we needed, and was a very pleasant experience. We will be repeat renters!

Yellowstone Lake State Park, WI, United States
The park lies in southwestern Wisconsin near Blanchardville, roughly a 45 minute drive south of Madison and about 2 hours and 30 minutes northwest of Chicago via I-90 and rural state highways. RV drivers should plan for narrow, hilly county roads in the Driftless Area with some sharp curves and blind hill crests, and watch for farm traffic and low-clearance bridges on back routes. Use state highways such as WI 78 and WI 39 to stay on wider pavement before turning off toward the park entrance. Dane County Regional Airport in Madison is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers.
