Best time to visit Montauk State Park

Late spring and early fall offer the most comfortable RV weather, with mild temperatures, lower humidity, and strong trout fishing. The catch-and-keep trout season runs March 1 through October 31, so opening day in March and holiday weekends draw the largest crowds. Summer brings warm, humid days ideal for wading and floating, while winter offers quiet catch-and-release fishing with fewer campers. Shoulder seasons in April, May, September, and October balance good fishing with easier campsite availability.

  • Montauk Fish Hatchery Tour Easy

The Missouri Department of Conservation hatchery at Montauk produces the rainbow trout stocked in the park. Self-guided walkways pass the raceways where visitors can see fish at every stage of growth. Parking near the hatchery accommodates standard vehicles and most RVs.

  • Historic Montauk Mill Easy
    RV parking available

The Montauk Mill is a preserved 19th century grist mill near the spring branch, one of the oldest structures in the park. Interpretive signs explain the site's milling history and early Ozark settlement. The short walk from the parking area is flat and accessible.

  • Pine Ridge Trail Moderate

Pine Ridge Trail is a short hiking loop through shortleaf pine and oak forest above the river valley. It offers a quiet break from the busy fishing areas and modest elevation gain. Trailhead parking is limited, so arrive early during peak season.

  • River Floating and Paddling Easy
    RV parking available

The Current River below the park becomes one of Missouri's classic float streams, flowing into the Ozark National Scenic Riverways downstream. Paddlers can launch canoes and kayaks from designated access points. Local outfitters in the area provide shuttles and rentals.

  • Nature Center and Interpretive Programs Easy
    RV parking available

The park nature center offers exhibits on Ozark ecology, trout life cycles, and local history. Ranger-led programs run on weekends during the main season. It is a good rainy day option and suitable for all ages.

  • Picnicking Along the Spring Branch Easy
    RV parking available

Shaded picnic areas line the cold, clear spring branch near the hatchery. Tables, grills, and restrooms are available, and several spots sit within easy walking distance of parking. The setting is popular for family gatherings during summer.
