Late June through early September offers the warmest, driest weather and the most reliable passenger ferry service from Nanaimo. July and August are peak months with the fullest interpretive programming, while May, June, and September are quieter shoulder-season options with mild temperatures. A park interpreter is in attendance during the summer to provide visitor information and to interpret the island's unique human and natural history. Winter visits are limited because ferry service is reduced and most island facilities are closed.

Newcastle Island offers an extensive network of walking and hiking trails that loop the shoreline and cross the forested interior. The trails lead to various historic points around the island. Trailheads begin at the ferry dock, so RV travellers park in Nanaimo and walk on. bcparks.ca/saysutshun-newcastle-island-marine-park/
A short walk leads to the site of a former Coast Salish village. Indigenous middens offer evidence of at least two Salish villages that were deserted before the discovery of coal in this area in 1849. Interpretive signage and summer guided walks share the island's cultural history. bcparks.ca/saysutshun-newcastle-island-marine-park/
The island shoreline is dominated by steep sandstone cliffs and ledges, interspersed with sunny beaches. Visitors can picnic on the sand, wade in shallow coves, and photograph the shoreline formations. Beach access is via the ferry dock and short connecting trails. bcparks.ca/saysutshun-newcastle-island-marine-park/
Mark Bay offers a sheltered anchorage and dock on the south side of Newcastle Island. Private boat owners can tie up to the wharf or anchor at Mark Bay, with berthing facilities for more than 50 boats available at the island. bcparks.ca/saysutshun-newcastle-island-marine-park/
Summer programming highlights the island's Indigenous and settler history. A park interpreter is in attendance during the summer to provide visitor information and to interpret the island's unique human and natural history. The park operator has information on dates, times of walks, talks and other program details. bcparks.ca/saysutshun-newcastle-island-marine-park/
Cyclists can ride the island's service roads for easy touring loops with ocean views. Bicycles with electric assist motors (e-bikes) are restricted to park roads and areas where motorized use is permitted, not the trails. bcparks.ca/saysutshun-newcastle-island-marine-park/
RV travellers can pair the park with nearby Nanaimo attractions. Petroglyph Park, just south of the city, has native rock carvings; marinas offer boats and gear for salmon fishing in surrounding waters; and the Pacific Biological Research Station at Departure Bay has public displays. bcparks.ca/saysutshun-newcastle-island-marine-park/
Great hosts. Friendly and responsive. Trailer was exactly as described and had everything we needed for our 5 night stay. The king bed was comfy, my kids complained a bit about the bunk mattresses, they were a little thin.

Newcastle Island Marine Provincial Park, BC, Canada
Newcastle Island is accessible by boat only. Once visitors reach Nanaimo (mainland travellers can ferry over via Horseshoe Bay), they take the foot passenger ferry for the 10 minute ride from Maffeo-Sutton Park, just north of downtown Nanaimo on Hwy 1. RV renters typically park or camp in the Nanaimo area and walk on to the ferry, since no vehicles are allowed on the island. From Victoria the drive up Highway 1 is roughly 110 km (about 1.5 to 2 hours), and from Vancouver travellers take BC Ferries from Tsawwassen to Duke Point or Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay with crossings of about 1.5 to 2 hours. Nanaimo Airport (YCD) is the closest airport for fly-and-rent trips.
