Late June through August is the prime window, with warm weather ideal for swimming in Higgins Lake and full campground services open. July offers peak water temperatures but the busiest weekends, so midweek stays are easier to book. September is an excellent shoulder season for RV travel, with cooler nights, fewer crowds, and early fall color in the surrounding pines and hardwoods. May and early October bring quieter visits, though some facilities may operate on reduced schedules.

The park's sandy beach on the north shore of Higgins Lake is the headline attraction, known for unusually clear, aquamarine water. The shallow, gently sloping shoreline is well suited to families, and a large day-use parking area accommodates RVs and tow vehicles.
The CCC Museum preserves the history of Michigan's Civilian Conservation Corps camps from the 1930s. Housed in a reconstructed barracks complex, it features exhibits on the men who planted millions of trees across the state and includes interpretive trails and picnic areas near the parking lot.
The visitor center sits on the site of the former state tree nursery, once one of the largest in the world. Indoor exhibits and a short interpretive loop explain Michigan's forest history, reforestation efforts, and modern forestry practices.
A network of wooded hiking trails winds through mature red and white pines, wetlands, and along Beaver Creek. Loops range from about one to four miles and are mostly flat, making them accessible for most fitness levels.
Higgins Lake is a top Michigan fishery for lake trout, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, and rock bass. A boat launch just outside the park provides easy access, and shoreline fishing is possible from the day-use area.
The clear water of Higgins Lake is ideal for kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, and motorboating. RV campers often bring small craft or rent from nearby outfitters in Roscommon.
Paved park roads and the nearby CR-203 corridor offer easy, low-traffic cycling between the campground, beach, and museum areas. Riders can also connect to regional routes in the surrounding state forest.
When the campground is closed, the park remains open for day-use winter recreation. Groomed and ungroomed trails through the pine plantations provide a quiet setting for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
Tori and Dalton were so wonderful to work with! The camper was extremely clean and had everything in it that we needed. This was my first experience renting a camper and would recommend working with them to anyone! Thanks again, you two!

Excellent communication from Victoria. The RV was delivered on time and all my questions were answered. RV came with 4 chairs to place by the fire pit as well.

North Higgins Lake State Park, MI, United States
The park sits just off I-75 near the town of Roscommon, roughly a 2.5 to 3 hour drive from Detroit and about 3 hours from Grand Rapids. From I-75 exit 244, County Road 203 leads directly to the entrance, with flat, well-maintained roads and no tunnels or severe grades, making access straightforward for larger motorhomes and travel trailers. Travelers should watch for narrow secondary roads and seasonal deer activity at dawn and dusk. The nearest regional airport for fly-and-rent trips is MBS International Airport in Saginaw, with Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City as another option.
