Spring and fall, roughly April through May and September through October, are the most comfortable times to visit, with mild daytime temperatures and cooler nights that are ideal for RV camping. Summers from June through August are hot and often windy, though shaded cottonwood sites help moderate afternoon heat. Winter visits are possible because the park stays open year-round, but expect cold nights and occasional freezes that may affect water hookups. Weekdays outside holiday periods see very light use, making reservations easy.

The small stocked fishing pond at Oasis State Park is the centerpiece activity for most visitors. New Mexico Game and Fish periodically stocks it with species such as catfish and trout, depending on the season. A valid New Mexico fishing license is required for anglers aged 12 and older.
Low active sand dunes on the edge of the park offer a short walk into a landscape unusual for eastern New Mexico. The dunes are small enough for a quick family outing and sit within easy reach of the campground. Wear sturdy shoes and carry water, as there is no shade on the dunes.
A short interpretive nature trail loops through the cottonwood grove and pond area. The route is mostly flat and suitable for most fitness levels, making it a good stretch-the-legs option after a driving day. Interpretive signs highlight local plants and wildlife.
The park's water and tree cover attract migratory songbirds, waterfowl, and raptors that are uncommon in the surrounding prairie. Early morning visits in spring and fall are especially productive. Bring binoculars and a field guide for the best experience.
Shaded picnic shelters among the cottonwoods provide a relaxing spot for lunch or an afternoon break. Tables, grills, and nearby restrooms make it easy for day visitors and campers alike. The day-use area has ample space for parking larger vehicles.
The Blackwater Draw archaeological site and museum, associated with the famous Clovis culture discoveries, lies a short drive from the park between Portales and Clovis. It is a compact, paved site well suited to a half-day outing from the campground. Check seasonal hours before visiting.
Low ambient light on the eastern New Mexico plains makes the park a solid spot for casual stargazing on clear nights. Summer offers warm evenings for lingering outside, while winter brings crisp, exceptionally clear skies. Bring a red-filter flashlight to preserve night vision around camp.
