The main trail is a short, family-friendly walk from the trailhead parking lot down to the shoreline. The park has 1.6 miles of hiking trail leading to Orcas Island's largest publicly accessible beach. Expect gentle forested terrain with glimpses of the water before descending to the cobble beach. nps.gov/places/obstruction-pass-state-park.htm
The park's beach is a natural launch point for paddling in Obstruction Pass and around nearby islands. The beach is perfect for launching kayaks, and a mooring buoy is available for boat-in visitors. Currents in the pass can be strong, so paddlers should check tide and current tables before heading out.
At low tide, the rocky shoreline reveals pockets of marine life. Time your visit well and you might get to visit tidepools filled with marine life and enjoy views of nearby islands and distant mountains. Tread carefully on slippery rocks and leave creatures in place.
Walk-in campers can overnight just steps from the water. The park has 10 primitive campsites and a mooring buoy for boat-in visitors. There is no potable water or trash service, so all supplies must be carried in and all waste carried out. nps.gov/places/obstruction-pass-state-park.htm
Moran State Park is the larger neighboring park and a natural add-on day trip. Its 38-mile hiking trail network is the largest in the archipelago, and trails and roads lead to the top of Mount Constitution, whose 2,409-foot summit is the highest point in the San Juan Archipelago. The summit road offers sweeping views that are a highlight of any Orcas Island trip. nps.gov/places/moran-state-park.htm
The waters around Obstruction Pass are rich with marine wildlife. Travelers on area ferries and shorelines can see birds, harbor seals, sea lions, and, with luck, an orca. Bring binoculars and scan the pass from the beach or nearby overlooks.
The southeast-facing beach offers clear sightlines across the water to neighboring islands. Visitors can enjoy views of nearby islands and distant mountains. Early morning and golden-hour light are particularly rewarding for landscape photography.
This was our first time renting a trailer and it was awesome! Mark and his wife were lovely people and it was a pleasure meeting and communicating with them. We had everything we needed in the trailer and it worked perfectly for where we were with no hookups. Anytime we had questions, Mark was very quick to answer and explained everything about the trailer before they left. Thank you so much guys! :)

Obstruction Pass State Park, WA, United States
Obstruction Pass State Park is reached by taking a Washington State Ferries sailing from Anacortes to Orcas Island, then driving roughly 15 miles via Horseshoe Highway and Olga Road to the trailhead near Olga. The Washington State Ferries, a state agency, provides regular transportation to and from San Juan, Orcas, Lopez, and Shaw Islands in the San Juans and the gateway community of Anacortes on the mainland. From Seattle, Anacortes is about 85 miles and roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by road, and RV drivers should reserve a vehicle space on the ferry in advance, confirm overall length including any tow vehicle, and be prepared for narrow, winding island roads with tight turns near the park. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA); Bellingham International Airport (BLI) is a closer regional option.
