Late April through mid-June and September through October are the most comfortable windows, with daytime highs in the 70s F and cool nights that are ideal for RV camping. Summer brings warm lake temperatures great for swimming and boating, but July and August can be hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms. Fall delivers colorful hardwood foliage and reduced insect activity, while early spring offers bird migration and quieter campgrounds. Winter stays are possible since the park is open year-round, though some loops and amenities may operate on reduced service.

The park's lakeside location on John H. Kerr Reservoir gives RVers direct access to Virginia's largest lake. A multi-lane boat ramp, courtesy docks, and ample trailer parking make launch days easy for visitors towing powerboats, pontoons, or kayaks.
Occoneechee is known for bass, crappie, catfish, and striper fishing on the reservoir. Shore access from several points in the park and fish-cleaning stations near the campgrounds make it a convenient base for anglers.
This gentle interpretive loop winds through mixed hardwood forest and wetland edges frequented by warblers, herons, and woodpeckers. Well-marked trailhead parking accommodates passenger vehicles and small tow vehicles from the campground.
A signed route passes the foundations, terraced gardens, and outbuildings of the historic Occoneechee Plantation. Interpretive panels along the way explain the site's layered Indigenous and antebellum history.
More than 20 miles of multi-use trails crisscross the park, with options ranging from flat lakeside paths to rolling singletrack. Most trailheads are accessible from day-use parking areas suited to trucks and SUVs towing bikes.
A designated swim beach on the reservoir and shaded picnic shelters provide a cool break on hot Piedmont afternoons. Large paved lots near the day-use area accommodate RVs and travel trailers.
Exhibits introduce the Occoneechi people and the plantation era that followed. A short walk leads to restored terraced gardens originally built in the nineteenth century, offering an easy cultural stop between outdoor activities.
"Story" was a great RV and Joshua was an amazing host. This was our first time traveling in an RV and Joshua was very patient in answering all of our questions. He provided a very thorough orientation. The RV was fully equipped with everything we needed including kitchen/bath items, camping chairs, linens, etc. Everything was clean, well maintained, and exactly as described. We were able to boondock without any issues. Communication with Joshua was amazing and I highly recommend this rental.

Occoneechee State Park, VA, United States
The park is off US Route 58 near Clarksville, Virginia, roughly 1.5 hours southwest of Richmond and about 1 hour and 45 minutes north of Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina. From I-85, exit at South Hill and follow US 58 west for approximately 20 miles to the park entrance on Occoneechee Park Road. Roads in are rolling Piedmont two-lanes with no tunnels, steep mountain passes, or low-clearance obstacles, making access straightforward for larger rigs, though drivers should watch for tight turns inside the campground loops. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Raleigh-Durham International (RDU), with Richmond International (RIC) a practical alternative.
