Late October through April is the most comfortable window for RV travel, with mild temperatures, lower humidity, and far fewer mosquitoes than summer. Spring, especially March and April, brings blooming wildflowers and excellent birding during migration. Summer visits are possible but hot, humid, and buggy, so early mornings on the water are best. Shoulder months like May and October offer warm paddling weather without peak-summer crowds.

The park's signature activity is paddling marked canoe and kayak trails through flooded palmetto groves and a central lagoon. Rentals are available on-site, and trailheads are reachable on foot from the campground.
Anglers can launch from the park's boat ramp onto the Vermilion River to target bass, catfish, and panfish. A day-use parking area near the ramp accommodates tow vehicles and trailers.
A family-friendly splash pad and lazy river operate seasonally near the campground and cabins. They offer a cool break on hot Louisiana afternoons and are within walking distance of RV sites.
The park's mix of palmetto understory, bottomland hardwoods, and river frontage attracts alligators, wading birds, warblers, and white-tailed deer. Early morning and late afternoon are prime viewing windows from trails and boardwalks.
Short interpretive trails and boardwalks loop through subtropical palmetto forest near the visitor area. They are mostly flat and suitable for casual walkers.
Avery Island, home of the Tabasco factory and Jungle Gardens, is about a 30-minute drive from the park. It pairs well with a Palmetto Island basecamp for a Cajun country itinerary.
Day-use picnic areas and reservable pavilions sit near the lagoon and playground. Large paved pull-throughs make it practical to stop in an RV for a midday break.
Great Host!

Derek was really easy to work with and very flexible on the pickup and return times. If we need to rent a camper again, I would definitely rent from him again.

Palmetto Island State Park, LA, United States
The park sits roughly 16 miles south of Abbeville and about 40 miles south of Lafayette, a drive of under an hour from Lafayette on US-167 and LA-82 to LA-690. New Orleans is approximately 160 miles east, around 3 hours by RV via I-10. Roads into the park are flat coastal Louisiana highways with no mountain passes or tunnels, though the final stretch on LA-690 is a narrow rural road, so drive cautiously in larger rigs. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Lafayette Regional Airport (LFT), with Louis Armstrong New Orleans International (MSY) as a larger alternative.
