Spring (March through May) and fall (October through November) offer the most comfortable weather, with mild temperatures, active wildlife, and lower humidity than midsummer. Summer is green and lush but hot and humid, with highs often in the 90s F and heavy mosquito activity near the swamp. Winter is generally mild and a good off-season window for RV travelers seeking quieter campgrounds, though occasional cold fronts can bring freezing nights. Avoid visiting right after heavy rains, as the San Marcos River can flood low-lying sections of the park.

The San Marcos River runs through Palmetto State Park and offers a gentle paddling loop accessible from on-site put-in points. Kayaks and canoes can be rented seasonally at the park headquarters. This is the signature activity for most visitors.
This short loop trail winds through a dense stand of dwarf palmettos and bottomland hardwoods that give the park its name. It is flat, shaded, and suitable for most visitors, with interpretive signage about the unusual ecosystem.
The four-acre oxbow lake inside the park is stocked and open to bank and pier fishing, with no state license required within park boundaries. Common catches include catfish, bass, and sunfish. A short paved path provides accessible shoreline access.
A longer interconnected trail system crosses mesquite flats and riverside forest, totaling several miles of moderate walking. Spring and fall are the most pleasant seasons for hiking due to cooler temperatures.
Palmetto is a well-known birding hotspot on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, with more than 240 species recorded. The swamp and river habitats attract warblers, woodpeckers, herons, and seasonal migrants. Early morning from the refectory area is a productive spot.
The park's stone refectory and water tower were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A self-guided walk around the historic core takes under an hour. Interpretive panels explain the CCC's role in shaping Texas state parks.
Seasonal river swimming and tubing are popular along designated stretches of the San Marcos River during summer months. Water levels and safety conditions vary, so check current park advisories before entering the water.

Palmetto State Park, TX, United States
The park sits just off US 183 near Ottine in Gonzales County, about 10 minutes south of Luling. From San Antonio it is roughly 60 miles east (about 1 hour) via I-10 and US 183, and from Austin it is roughly 70 miles south (about 1.5 hours) via SH 130 and US 183. Houston is about 150 miles east, a 2.5 hour drive via I-10. Access roads are flat, paved rural highways with no tunnels or steep grades, making the approach friendly for larger RVs, though the interior park road is narrow and winding with some low-clearance tree branches, so slow driving is advised. The nearest major airports for fly-and-rent trips are San Antonio International (SAT) and Austin-Bergstrom International (AUS).
