Best time to visit Pilot Mountain State Park

Late April through early June and mid-September through early November are the most comfortable windows, with mild daytime temperatures, lower humidity, and strong visibility from the overlooks. Fall brings peak color on the hardwood slopes and draws heavy weekend traffic to the summit parking area, so midweek arrivals are easier for larger RVs. Summer is open and green but hot and humid in the Piedmont, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Winter visits are possible, though the summit road and upper parking lots can close during ice or snow events.

Things to do at Pilot Mountain State Park

  • Little Pinnacle Overlook Easy

Little Pinnacle Overlook is a short, nearly level walk from the summit parking area that delivers the park's most iconic view of the sheer-sided Big Pinnacle. The paved path and stone walls make it one of the few easy overlooks directly accessible by vehicle. Summit parking is limited and best reached outside peak weekend hours.

  • Jomeokee Trail Moderate

The Jomeokee Trail is a roughly 0.8-mile loop that circles the base of Big Pinnacle through rhododendron and rock outcrops. It starts from the summit parking area and offers 360-degree views of the Sauratown Mountains and Yadkin Valley. Footing is rocky in places but the elevation change is modest.

  • Ledge Spring Trail Strenuous

Ledge Spring Trail follows the top of the park's main climbing cliffs for views across the Piedmont before dropping steeply to the base of the rock. It is a popular approach for climbers and for hikers seeking a more strenuous loop with Mountain Trail. Expect rocky, uneven surfaces and some steep grades.

  • Grindstone Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

Grindstone Trail is a wooded trail of about 1.5 miles that connects the family campground to the summit area. It gains elevation steadily through hardwood forest and is a convenient hike-from-camp option for RV guests. The trail is rated moderate, with some rooted sections.

  • Rock Climbing at Ledge Spring Strenuous

Pilot Mountain is one of the best-known traditional climbing areas in North Carolina, with routes along the Ledge Spring and Three Bears Gully cliffs. Climbers must register at the park office and follow seasonal closures that protect nesting raptors. Approach trails are short but steep.

  • Horse Trails in the Corridor and Yadkin River Section Moderate
    RV parking available

The park maintains a network of bridle trails through the corridor linking the mountain section to the Yadkin River section. Equestrian trailer parking is provided at designated trailheads, and riders must bring their own stock. Trails traverse rolling farmland, hardwood forest, and riverside terrain.

  • Paddling the Yadkin River Easy
    RV parking available

The Yadkin River section provides a canoe and kayak access point for float trips on the Yadkin River State Trail. Primitive canoe-in campsites are available along the river for overnight paddlers. Currents are typically gentle but vary with rainfall.

  • Family Campground Picnic Area Easy
    RV parking available

The family campground near the base of the mountain includes a picnic area, restrooms with hot showers, and direct trail access to the summit via Grindstone Trail. Sites accommodate tents and RVs and are reservable through the NC State Parks system. It is the primary base for overnight RV travelers at the park.

Everything worked as it should.
