Late April through early June and mid-September through early November are the most comfortable windows, with mild daytime temperatures, lower humidity, and strong visibility from the overlooks. Fall brings peak color on the hardwood slopes and draws heavy weekend traffic to the summit parking area, so midweek arrivals are easier for larger RVs. Summer is open and green but hot and humid in the Piedmont, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Winter visits are possible, though the summit road and upper parking lots can close during ice or snow events.
Cold snaps and occasional snow can temporarily close the summit road.
Icy overlooks possible; bare-tree views are excellent on clear days.
Variable weather; rock climbing routes begin to dry out.
Wildflowers and comfortable hiking temperatures.
Peak spring conditions; weekends fill quickly.
Warm and humid; afternoon thunderstorms common.
Hottest month; start hikes early.
Humid with frequent storms; carry extra water.
Cooler evenings and clearer skies return.
Peak fall color; expect heavy weekend traffic to the summit.
Crisp, dry days; lower crowds midweek.
Summit road may close temporarily during winter storms.
Little Pinnacle Overlook is a short, nearly level walk from the summit parking area that delivers the park's most iconic view of the sheer-sided Big Pinnacle. The paved path and stone walls make it one of the few easy overlooks directly accessible by vehicle. Summit parking is limited and best reached outside peak weekend hours.
The Jomeokee Trail is a roughly 0.8-mile loop that circles the base of Big Pinnacle through rhododendron and rock outcrops. It starts from the summit parking area and offers 360-degree views of the Sauratown Mountains and Yadkin Valley. Footing is rocky in places but the elevation change is modest.
Ledge Spring Trail follows the top of the park's main climbing cliffs for views across the Piedmont before dropping steeply to the base of the rock. It is a popular approach for climbers and for hikers seeking a more strenuous loop with Mountain Trail. Expect rocky, uneven surfaces and some steep grades.
Grindstone Trail is a wooded trail of about 1.5 miles that connects the family campground to the summit area. It gains elevation steadily through hardwood forest and is a convenient hike-from-camp option for RV guests. The trail is rated moderate, with some rooted sections.
Pilot Mountain is one of the best-known traditional climbing areas in North Carolina, with routes along the Ledge Spring and Three Bears Gully cliffs. Climbers must register at the park office and follow seasonal closures that protect nesting raptors. Approach trails are short but steep.
The park maintains a network of bridle trails through the corridor linking the mountain section to the Yadkin River section. Equestrian trailer parking is provided at designated trailheads, and riders must bring their own stock. Trails traverse rolling farmland, hardwood forest, and riverside terrain.
The Yadkin River section provides a canoe and kayak access point for float trips on the Yadkin River State Trail. Primitive canoe-in campsites are available along the river for overnight paddlers. Currents are typically gentle but vary with rainfall.
The family campground near the base of the mountain includes a picnic area, restrooms with hot showers, and direct trail access to the summit via Grindstone Trail. Sites accommodate tents and RVs and are reservable through the NC State Parks system. It is the primary base for overnight RV travelers at the park.
Beautiful spacious RV and excellent communication! I’d highly recommend to anyone. We got set up at Martinsville speedway on challenging terrain and the hosts were very accommodating. Book with confidence!

This was my first experience personally using an RV rental service and it could not have gone better. Zack was very helpful and accommodating with all the questions and concerns I had and I would not hesitate to rent from him again. Pick up and drop off was very flexible. The unit was very clean. Everything worked as it should.

Pilot Mountain State Park, NC, United States
The main entrance is off US 52 near Pinnacle, North Carolina, about 25 miles north of Winston-Salem (roughly 35 minutes) and 14 miles south of Mount Airy. Charlotte is about 100 miles south by way of I-77, and Greensboro is about 50 miles east. RV drivers should note that the paved road to the summit parking area is steep, narrow, and winding with tight switchbacks, and is posted as unsuitable for vehicles and trailers over about 25 feet; larger rigs should park at the lower family campground or day-use areas. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Piedmont Triad International (GSO) in Greensboro.
