Spring (March through May) and fall (late September through early November) offer the most comfortable weather for RV travel, with mild days, cool nights, and fewer biting insects. Summer is peak season thanks to the lake, but temperatures regularly climb past 95 F and weekend campsites book out far in advance. Winters are generally mild with occasional freezes, making the shoulder months a good choice for quieter stays and easier reservations. Wildflowers peak in April, while fall brings lower humidity and calmer lake conditions.

The park's designated swim beach is the main summer draw, offering easy access to the clear blue water of Possum Kingdom Lake. RVers can park in the day-use lot and walk to the beach. Kayaks, paddleboards, and small craft can be launched from adjacent coves.
Possum Kingdom is one of Texas's premier freshwater fisheries, known for striped bass, largemouth bass, catfish, and sand bass. The park has a fishing pier and multiple bank-access points reachable from the campground road.
Hell's Gate is the park's most recognizable landmark, a pair of towering cliffs framing a narrow passage on the lake. The formation is accessible by boat from the park marina, which rents small watercraft and also welcomes private launches.
Longhorn Loop is a moderate hike through cross-timbers woodland with lake overlooks. The trailhead has parking suitable for tow vehicles; long motorhomes should use the main day-use lot and walk in.
The park offers multi-use trails open to mountain bikes, winding over rocky hills with occasional technical sections. Riders should bring their own bikes and plenty of water in warmer months.
A small herd of official Texas state longhorns is kept at the park and can often be spotted from the park road. White-tailed deer, armadillos, and a variety of birds are common along quieter trails at dawn and dusk.
The on-site marina provides boat ramps, fuel, and slip rentals for visitors bringing watercraft. Trailer parking is available near the ramps, useful for RVers towing a boat behind their rig.

Possum Kingdom State Park, TX, United States
The park is located off Park Road 33 near Caddo, Texas, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours west of Fort Worth via US-180 and about 2.5 hours from Dallas. The nearest major airports for fly-and-rent travelers are Dallas/Fort Worth International (DFW) and Dallas Love Field, both roughly 100 to 120 miles east. Approach roads are paved two-lane highways with no tunnels or major mountain passes, though the final descent on Park Road 33 into the lake basin includes curves and moderate grades that drivers of long motorhomes and travel trailers should take slowly. Fuel and groceries are available in Mineral Wells and Graford before entering the park.
