Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable times to visit, with mild daytime temperatures, lower humidity, and vibrant foliage or blooming hardwoods. Summer brings warm, humid weather with regular thunderstorms, but it is prime season for paddling and swimming the James River. Winter stays are possible for RV travelers who want solitude, though services may be reduced. Shoulder seasons in April, May, September, and October generally offer the best balance of weather and campsite availability.

The park provides direct access to the James River for kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding. A car-top boat launch within the park is a popular put-in for float trips down this stretch of the river.
Powhatan State Park offers a network of multi-use trails winding through hardwood forest, along the river, and across open meadows. Most trails are relatively flat, reflecting the Piedmont terrain, making them suitable for casual walkers.
The park's shared-use trail system is open to mountain bikes, offering singletrack and wider paths through forested terrain. Trail parking near the trailheads accommodates vehicles and can often fit smaller RVs or tow vehicles.
Equestrians can use designated multi-use trails within the park. Riders typically bring their own horses, and trailer parking is provided at the equestrian trailhead.
Anglers fish the James River from the shoreline and from boats for species such as smallmouth bass, catfish, and sunfish. A valid Virginia freshwater fishing license is required for anyone aged 16 and older.
Picnic areas with tables and shelters are available for day visitors and campers. The open fields and riverfront settings are popular for family gatherings and quiet afternoons.
The mix of river, forest, and meadow habitats supports a wide variety of birds and wildlife. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to spot deer, songbirds, wading birds, and waterfowl along the James River corridor.
My little family and I rented this camper and it was amazing everything was as described and then some 10/10 would recommend

It was such a great experience renting this camper. The host was wonderful and very communicative. All our needs were met by the host. The camper was also great. Clean & comfortable. My favorite thing is that the camper comes fully stocked with linens, plates, and pots/pans.

Powhatan State Park, VA, United States
The park sits in Powhatan County, roughly a 45 minute drive west of Richmond, Virginia, via US-60 or Route 711, and about 90 minutes east of Charlottesville. Access roads are rural two-lane routes with some narrow shoulders, so RV drivers should watch for low-hanging tree limbs, tight turns near the park entrance, and no significant mountain grades in this part of the Piedmont. Richmond International Airport (RIC) is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers, approximately an hour away depending on traffic. There are no tunnels or weight-restricted passes on the main approaches.
