Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, CA, United States
From Eureka, take US-101 north for approximately 50 miles (one hour) to reach the park near Orick. From Crescent City, drive south on US-101 for 25 miles (40 minutes). The nearest commercial airport is Arcata-Eureka Airport (ACV), 28 miles south of Orick, with rental car services available. RVs must note that Davison Road to Gold Bluffs Beach and Fern Canyon is limited to 8 feet wide and 24 feet long with no trailers. Elk Prairie Campground accepts RVs up to 27 feet (motorhomes) or 24 feet (trailers).
Late May through mid-June and mid-September through early October offer the best conditions, with mild temperatures (60-65°F), lower rainfall, and fewer crowds. Summer months (June through September) are warmest (68-69°F highs) but busiest, with popular Fern Canyon requiring day-use reservations from May 15 through September 15. Winter brings heavy rain and cooler days (52-54°F), though Elk Prairie campground remains open year-round. Plan for frequent fog and rain gear in any season.

This 1.2-mile easy loop trail descends into a 50-80 foot canyon draped with five species of ferns and other moisture-loving plants. A 10.4-mile moderate trail with 1,400 feet of elevation gain that descends through old-growth redwoods alongside creeks, ending at Fern Canyon. A 10-mile scenic drive through old-growth redwood forest that parallels Highway 101 with no backtracking needed. The parkway offers a dozen trailheads and pull-outs, including Big Tree Wayside and the Prairie Creek-Foothill Loop accessible trail. The park's namesake prairie meadow is home to wild herds of Roosevelt elk, the largest elk subspecies in North America. Pull-outs along Newton B. A 2.5-mile easy trail that meanders alongside Prairie Creek under some of the tallest redwoods in the world. The trail is flat and accessible, offering a peaceful walk through mature redwood forest. An 11.6-mile moderate loop combining two trails through old-growth redwoods and coastal bluffs, offering diverse scenery and wildlife viewing.
