Best time to visit Purtis Creek State Park

Spring, from March through May, offers the best balance of mild temperatures, wildflowers, and active bass fishing on the lake. Fall, especially October and November, brings cooler air, fewer mosquitoes, and pleasant nights for RV camping. Summer is hot and humid with highs often near 95 F, so early-morning and shoreline activities work best, while winter is mild and quiet with occasional cold fronts and the lowest crowds of the year.

Things to do at Purtis Creek State Park

  • Trophy Bass Fishing on Purtis Creek Lake Easy
    RV parking available

Purtis Creek Lake is the park's centerpiece and one of the best-known catch-and-release trophy bass lakes in East Texas. Anglers can fish from shore, the lighted fishing pier, or small boats, with strict size limits on largemouth bass to protect the fishery.

  • Paddling and Kayaking Easy
    RV parking available

The lake's no-wake rule keeps the water calm and ideal for kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards. Launch points are close to the campground, so RV campers can carry boats down without long portages.

  • Beaver Slide Nature Trail Easy
    RV parking available

This short, family-friendly loop winds through post oak woods near the lake and is the park's main hiking route. It is well suited to a quick morning or evening walk from the campground.

  • Wildlife Watching and Birding Easy
    RV parking available

The park's mix of woodland, shoreline, and open meadow attracts white-tailed deer, herons, ducks, and a variety of songbirds. Early mornings near the lake and along the trail loops are the most productive times to look for wildlife.

  • Lakeside Picnicking and Day Use Easy
    RV parking available

Day-use picnic areas sit along the shoreline with tables, grills, and easy water access. RV-friendly parking near these areas makes it simple to set up for an afternoon by the water.

  • Swimming at the Designated Area Easy
    RV parking available

A designated unsupervised swimming area on the lake gives families a place to cool off in summer. Swimmers should follow posted rules, as the lake is shared with anglers and paddlers.

  • Stargazing from the Campground Easy
    RV parking available

Rural skies away from Dallas-Fort Worth light pollution make for solid stargazing on clear nights. RV sites with open sky views toward the lake are especially good after the campground quiets down.

How to get to Purtis Creek State Park

Purtis Creek State Park sits off FM 316 just north of Eustace, Texas, roughly 75 miles southeast of Dallas (about a 1.5-hour drive) and about 20 miles west of Athens. From Dallas, most RV travelers take US 175 east to FM 316 north, a straightforward route on paved two-lane roads with no mountain grades or tunnels. The final stretch on FM 316 is rural with some narrow shoulders and rolling hills, so larger rigs should drive cautiously and watch for sharp turns at the park entrance. Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Dallas Love Field (DAL) are the nearest major airports for fly-and-rent RV trips.
