Queen Wilhelmina State Park, AR, United States
The park is reached via Arkansas Highway 88, the Talimena Scenic Byway, roughly 13 miles west of Mena, Arkansas. Drive times are approximately 2 hours from Fort Smith, 3.5 hours from Little Rock, and about 3.5 hours from Oklahoma City. RV drivers should plan for a steady mountain climb with curves, grades, and limited pullouts on the byway, so lower gears and cool brakes are essential, and very long rigs should check campground length limits before committing to the ridge road. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Fort Smith Regional Airport, with Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport in Little Rock as a larger alternative.
Late April through June and mid-September through early November are the best windows for RV travel. Spring brings wildflowers and mild ridgetop temperatures, while fall offers vivid hardwood color along the Talimena Scenic Byway and fewer biting insects. Midsummer is noticeably cooler on Rich Mountain than in the Arkansas lowlands, but afternoon thunderstorms are common. Winter visits are possible since the byway stays open year round, though cold snaps, ice, and fog can affect mountain driving.

The Talimena National Scenic Byway is a 54-mile mountain drive linking Mena, Arkansas, with Talihina, Oklahoma, passing directly through Queen Wilhelmina State Park. The road offers panoramas of the east-west Ouachita ranges, winding along the spine of Rich Mountain and Winding Stair Mountain with scenic vistas, historical sites, camping, picnicking, and hiking access. Pullouts along the route have space suitable for shorter RVs and tow vehicles. fs.usda.gov/r08/ouachita/recreation/talimena-national-scenic-byway
Rich Mountain is the high point of the Ouachita National Forest and rises just above the park. The summit offers a breathtaking view from the highest point on the Ouachita National Forest at 2,681 feet, though the historic lookout tower is closed for safety reasons. A short walk from the byway parking area leads to viewpoints suitable for most visitors. fs.usda.gov/r08/ouachita/recreation/rich-mountain
Lover's Leap Trail is a short loop that drops from the lodge area to a rocky ridge overlook with long views south into the Ouachitas. It is a good leg-stretcher for RV campers staying in the park and does not require a shuttle. Footing is rocky in places, so sturdy shoes are recommended.
The long-distance Ouachita National Recreation Trail crosses Rich Mountain near the park, offering day-hike options in both directions. The 192-mile trail extends from Talimena State Park in Oklahoma to Pinnacle Mountain State Park. RV travelers can use park parking as a base for out-and-back day hikes. fs.usda.gov/visit/destinations
Queen Wilhelmina Lodge is the historic mountaintop hotel that gives the park its identity, set amid manicured grounds, gardens, and picnic areas. Day visitors can stroll the grounds, dine at the lodge restaurant, and enjoy ridge-top views without leaving paved paths. Parking near the lodge accommodates RVs and tow vehicles.
Several short nature trails radiate from the campground and lodge area, winding through oak-hickory forest typical of the high Ouachitas. These routes are suitable for families and offer interpretive opportunities close to RV sites. Expect rocky, rolling terrain rather than flat walking.
The park's ridgetop location and distance from major cities make it a solid dark-sky destination in Arkansas. On clear nights, campers can step out of their RV to see the Milky Way from open areas near the lodge and campground. Bring a red-filter flashlight to preserve night vision.
