Late April through mid-June and September through October are the strongest windows for RV travel, offering mild temperatures, lower humidity, and good trail conditions. Midsummer brings warm, humid weather and the most activity at the lake, pool, and picnic grounds, so reservations fill faster on holiday weekends. Shoulder seasons in early spring and late fall are quieter, though some water services at the campground may be shut off once overnight temperatures drop. Winter visits are possible for day use, but expect limited amenities.

Red Hills Lake is a 40-acre park lake stocked with warm-water species including largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, and crappie. A boat launch and shoreline access make it easy for anglers to fish from kayaks, small boats, or the bank. Only electric motors are permitted, keeping the lake quiet.
Red Hills offers several short hiking trails that loop through oak-hickory woodlands and along the lake. Routes are generally easy to moderate and highlight wildflowers in spring and fall color in October. Trailheads connect to picnic areas and campground roads.
A seasonal public swimming pool and large picnic shelters sit near the center of the park. Families can cool off in summer and use grills and tables between outings. Ample day-use parking accommodates tow vehicles once the RV is set up at camp.
Small boats, canoes, and kayaks are welcome on Red Hills Lake under the park's electric-motor-only rule. Paddlers enjoy calm water with forested shoreline and good wildlife viewing. A concession seasonally rents small craft near the boat dock.
A short interpretive walk near the main park area identifies native Illinois hardwoods and understory plants. It is an easy stroll suitable for all ages and a quick stop for RVers spending a night en route. Benches along the path make for relaxed birdwatching.
A small chapel sits atop one of the park's highest ridges, offering an elevated view across the surrounding wooded hills. The short climb is a popular photo stop and sunset spot. Parking is available near the base of the hill.
The park's mix of mature hardwoods, lake edge, and meadow provides habitat for white-tailed deer, wild turkey, waterfowl, and a variety of songbirds. Early morning walks along the lake and quieter trails are most productive. Bring binoculars during spring and fall migration.

Red Hills State Park, IL, United States
The park entrance is on U.S. Route 50 between Sumner and Lawrenceville, roughly a 2.5 to 3 hour drive east from St. Louis, Missouri, about 2.5 hours west of Louisville, Kentucky, and around 3 hours south of Indianapolis, Indiana. U.S. 50 is a two-lane rural highway through much of this stretch with rolling grades and small-town speed zone changes, so plan for slower average speeds in a larger motorhome or travel trailer. There are no tunnels or mountain passes on the approach, but inner park roads are narrow and winding with tree overhang, so high-profile rigs should take turns slowly. The nearest commercial airports for fly-and-rent trips are Evansville Regional Airport (EVV) in Indiana, about an hour east, and Indianapolis International Airport (IND), roughly three hours north.
