Redwood National Park, CA, United States
The park stretches approximately 50 miles along Highway 101 in Northern California, located about 6 hours north of San Francisco and 6 hours south of Portland. Crescent City, just 4 miles from the northern park entrance, provides lodging and services; Del Norte County Airport there offers limited commercial service for fly-and-rent options. Orick to the south is the gateway to Fern Canyon and Elk Prairie. RV travelers should note that the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway and Highway 101 accommodate most rigs, but Davison Road to Fern Canyon prohibits vehicles over 24 feet, and Tall Trees Road limits RVs to 21 feet maximum.
Summer months from June through September offer the most favorable conditions with less rainfall and warmer, drier weather ideal for scenic drives and hiking. However, coastal fog frequently shrouds the redwood groves during summer, and peak season brings larger crowds to trails and campgrounds. Shoulder months of April-May and October provide mild temperatures and lower visitor numbers, though brief rain showers are possible. Winter visits from November through March are the wettest period but offer solitude and the park's lush forest landscape; visitors should monitor road conditions as winter storms occasionally cause temporary closures.
Wettest month with significant rainfall; pack rain gear
Winter rains continue; roads may face storm-related temporary closures
Winter conditions; rhododendrons begin blooming late month
Spring arrives with rainfall declining; peak rhododendron bloom
Pleasant shoulder season with mild temperatures and lower crowds
Summer begins; fog moves inland through redwood canyons
Driest month with minimal rainfall; coastal fog common
Peak summer season; warmest month but still cool; crowded campgrounds
Late summer with pleasant conditions; Fern Canyon hiking bridges in place
Fall shoulder season; rainfall increasing
Winter approaches with significant rainfall; some trails may be wet or muddy
Peak winter rainfall; road conditions variable, prepare for wet conditions
