Best time to visit River Island State Park

October through April is generally the most comfortable window for RV travel, with mild daytime temperatures, cool nights, and lower humidity. Spring break weeks and holiday weekends fill quickly, so booking well ahead is recommended. Summer brings very hot desert temperatures that regularly exceed 100 F, but the river stays busy with boaters who come specifically for water recreation. Late fall and early spring are pleasant shoulder seasons with smaller crowds and good weather for hiking nearby trails.

The park has a sandy swim beach tucked into a sheltered cove on the river. It is a family friendly spot for swimming, wading, and floating during the warm months.

  • Fishing the Colorado River Easy

Anglers target largemouth bass, striped bass, catfish, and bluegill from the shoreline and from boats. A valid Arizona fishing license is required for anyone 10 and older.

  • Wedge Hill Trail Moderate

Wedge Hill Trail is a short desert hike that climbs to a ridge overlooking the river and the surrounding Buckskin Mountains. The trail connects the River Island area to neighboring Buckskin Mountain State Park.

  • Day Use and Picnicking Easy

Shaded ramadas, picnic tables, and grills are scattered along the cove for day use. It is a convenient stop for RV travelers driving the SR-95 river corridor.

The riparian zone along the Colorado River attracts herons, egrets, waterfowl, and raptors, while the surrounding desert supports bighorn sheep and numerous reptile species. Early morning and late afternoon offer the best viewing.

  • Visit Buckskin Mountain State Park Easy

Buckskin Mountain State Park sits just a short drive south on SR-95 and offers additional trails, a nature center, and a larger day-use area. It pairs naturally with a stay at River Island for RVers wanting more hiking options.

Jim was great, he delivered our trailer to Echo Lodge Campground on time, everything was set up, AC running, fridge was cold upon our arrival. He called me prior to us arriving and after we arrived to make sure everything was in proper working order. Trailer was roomy and clean, everything worked as it should. It was stocked with basic necessities such as plastic cups, silverware, k-cup coffee, soap, sponges and it had some bowls and plates. There was a couple pots and pans, kitchen utensils, etc. My only recommendation would be to have some extra toilet paper and cleaning supplies to keep it clean for a 7 day trip. The queen bed was very comfortable, and AC was cold. The two bunk beds were good, maybe bring a mattress topper or foam pad. The couch makes into a small bed life a child or small adult. The outdoor fridge was great, he included some extra chairs and and outdoor rug. Would definitely recommend for any family for a great time!

How to get to River Island State Park

The park sits on Arizona State Route 95 about 13 miles north of Parker, Arizona, and roughly 35 miles south of Lake Havasu City. From Phoenix it is about a 3 hour drive (around 160 miles) via US-60 and SR-95, and from Las Vegas it is about 3.5 hours south via US-95 and SR-95. SR-95 along the Parker Strip is paved and RV friendly with no tunnels or major grades, though the US-60 approach through Yarnell includes a steep grade (Yarnell Hill) that requires steady braking in larger rigs. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Laughlin/Bullhead International Airport, with Harry Reid International in Las Vegas as a larger alternative.
