Late April through early June and September through October are the best windows for RV travel, with mild temperatures, lower humidity, and strong river flow for floating. Midsummer brings hot, humid days and peak crowds, so weekends and holidays fill quickly and reservations are essential. Fall delivers vibrant Ozark foliage and cool nights ideal for campfires. Winter is quiet with bare trees and occasional freezes, and some services scale back in the off-season.

Mudlick Trail is a rugged backcountry hiking and backpacking loop climbing Mudlick Mountain through oak-hickory forest and rocky glades. The full loop runs roughly 12 miles with multiple shorter loops and primitive shelters built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Trailhead parking near the campground accommodates most tow vehicles and smaller motorhomes.
Floating and paddling the St. Francis River is the signature activity at the park. Calm stretches and small riffles make it suitable for families with canoes, kayaks, and tubes, with a concessionaire offering rentals and shuttles in season. Put-in access is within the park near the main day-use area.
Big Creek runs along the park and offers gravel-bar swimming, wading, and fishing for smallmouth bass, goggle-eye, and sunfish. Several day-use areas along the creek have shaded picnic sites and restrooms. Parking near the creek fits standard vehicles and medium rigs.
The Shut-Ins Trail is a short, scenic hike leading to rocky outcrops and small cascades on Big Creek. It is a good option for families looking for a quick leg-stretcher from camp. Trailhead parking is limited but accessible from the main park road.
A spur trail from the park connects hikers to the Wappapello Section of the long-distance Ozark Trail. The three primary trailheads on this section are Sam A. Baker State Park on the north, Hwy. 172, and Hendrickson Recreation Area on the south end. RVers can base out of the park campground and day-hike segments of the OT.
The park preserves a collection of rustic stone and timber buildings constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The historic dining lodge, bathhouse, and cabins showcase period craftsmanship and are walkable from the campground. Flat paved paths make it easy to explore without moving the RV.
The park maintains dedicated equestrian trails winding through the Mudlick Mountain backcountry. A separate equestrian camp and trailhead accommodate trailers and larger rigs. Riders should check trail conditions after rain as some segments can be muddy.

Sam A. Baker State Park, MO, United States
The park sits on Missouri Highway 143 about 4 miles north of Highway 34, roughly 25 miles west of Piedmont and about 115 miles (a 2 to 2.5 hour drive) south of St. Louis via US 67. Cape Girardeau is about 75 miles east, and Poplar Bluff is roughly 50 miles south. RV drivers should expect winding, hilly two-lane roads through the Ozark foothills with a few tight curves and grades on approach, so take it slow with longer rigs and trailers. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL).
