Late April through mid-June and September through late October are the best windows for RV travel to Shades State Park. Spring brings flowing waterfalls in the ravines and wildflower blooms, while autumn delivers strong hardwood color and cooler hiking temperatures. Midsummer is warm and humid and can be buggy in the ravines, though the shaded canopy keeps trails cooler than in open parks. Winter visits are possible, but expect limited facilities, icy trail stairs, and potentially reduced campground services.

Trail 2 is one of the signature ravine hikes at Shades State Park, dropping into Sugar Creek tributaries via stairs and ladders to seasonal Silver Cascade Falls. The route continues along sandstone bluffs with overlooks such as Prospect Point high above Sugar Creek.
Trail 1 is a short rugged hike down a ladder into the Devil's Punch Bowl, a shaded sandstone amphitheater carved by a small stream. It is one of the shortest but steepest trails in the park.
Pine Hills Nature Preserve is Indiana's first state nature preserve and adjoins Shades State Park with its own trail system. Hikers follow narrow ridges known as backbones between deep ravines shaded by old-growth white pine and hemlock.
Sugar Creek flows along the northern edge of the park and is one of Indiana's best-known canoeing streams. Paddlers can run sections past Shades and nearby Turkey Run State Park using local liveries for shuttles and rentals.
The park's family campground offers primitive-style sites suitable for tents and smaller RVs, set among the forest canopy. Facilities are basic, with vault or pit toilets and no hookups, which keeps the atmosphere quiet and rustic.
Shades State Park contains a small grass airstrip used by private pilots, a holdover from its origins as a rustic resort. Visitors can walk the open field edge and enjoy nearby ridge-top picnic areas with shelters.
Several picnic areas with shelters are spread across the ridge-top portions of the park, offering easy access for RV day-trippers. The surrounding hardwood forest supports deer, pileated woodpeckers, and many migratory songbirds in spring and fall.
Richard was very responsive to any questions that I had prior to picking unit up. Trailer was very clean and still looks like new inside. Had all the basic necessities both inside and out to ensure easy set-up. Would highly recommend this unit if you are camping in Indy area. Donnie Luce-CA

I had a great vacation and the ease of renting the camper made it so much better than staying in a hotel. Richard made it an easy transaction and was there if I needed any help. The camper was accommodating, very clean and comfortable to sleep in. I won't hesitate to do this again in the future and look forward to having another fulfilled adventure.

Iva was wonderful to work with! She made our experience so fabulous! I needed an RV because I was going to be running 100 mile race and I wanted a place where my family could stay comfortably while I ran! Mission accomplished! I was super nervous the day leading up to my race and that was also the day the RV was arriving. She made my experience so easy. Her timeliness, the cleanliness of her RV, all the perks that it has, I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect RV in person to rent from! If you’ve never rented an RV before, please know that Ivan makes this experience absolutely wonderful! Not to mention her RV has the most wonderful features!

Shades State Park, IN, United States
The park is near Waveland, Indiana, with access primarily via State Road 234. From Indianapolis it is roughly an hour drive west via I-74 and local highways, and from Terre Haute it is about a 45 minute drive northeast. RV drivers should note that the approach roads are rural two-lane routes with some tight curves and narrow shoulders, so large rigs should plan turns carefully and avoid shortcuts on unpaved county roads. Indianapolis International Airport is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent trips, located about 60 miles east of the park.
