Late June through early September offers the warmest water for swimming at Lake Shaftsbury and the most reliable weather for picnicking and paddling. Early fall, especially late September into early October, brings peak foliage across the Green Mountains and cooler hiking conditions with fewer crowds. Spring can be wet and muddy, and the park's day-use facilities are typically closed in the off-season, so RV travelers should confirm gate hours before arrival.

The park's sandy swim area on Lake Shaftsbury is the main summer draw. The shallow, calm water is well suited to families, and day-use parking accommodates most tow vehicles and smaller motorhomes.
A short loop trail circles the lake through mixed hardwood forest. The path is mostly flat and easy, making it a good leg-stretch for RV travelers passing through.
Canoes, kayaks, and paddleboats can be launched from the park's shoreline for a quiet paddle on the small lake. Motorized boats are restricted, keeping the water calm for beginners.
The lake supports warm-water species including bass and panfish. A valid Vermont fishing license is required, and anglers can cast from shore or a small boat.
Shaded picnic tables and a group pavilion overlook Lake Shaftsbury. The grassy day-use area is a popular midday stop for travelers driving the Route 7A corridor between Bennington and Manchester.
The Glastenbury Wilderness lies northeast of Bennington, beginning just north of Route 9, with more than fifteen miles of trails for hikers, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers. The Long Trail and Appalachian Trail cross the area from north to south past an old fire tower atop Glastenbury Mountain. Park the RV in Bennington and drive a smaller vehicle to trailheads on Forest Service roads. fs.usda.gov/r09/gmfl/recreation/glastenbury-wilderness
The town of Bennington, a short drive south of the park, offers the Bennington Battle Monument, covered bridges, and Robert Frost sites including the Peleg Cole Farm in South Shaftsbury, which Frost purchased in the 1920s.

Brandon was an exceptional host. Everything was ready to go and he explained the rental thoroughly as it was my first time renting. Very professional and a pleasure to work with. If you're looking to rent a camper, Brandon is the one to see.

Shaftsbury State Park, VT, United States
The park lies on U.S. Route 7A in the town of Shaftsbury, about 10 to 15 minutes north of Bennington and roughly 20 minutes south of Manchester Center. From Albany, New York, the drive is approximately 40 miles, or about an hour, via U.S. Route 7. RV drivers should note the winding, hilly two-lane roads typical of southern Vermont and watch for steep grades on secondary routes through the Green Mountains; stick to Route 7 and 7A for the most RV-friendly access. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Albany International Airport (ALB) in New York.
