Late spring through early fall, roughly May through October, is the most comfortable window for RV travel, with warm days, open campground loops, and full lake and beach access. Fall is especially popular in October when the hardwood ridges produce vivid color across the Shawnee State Forest. Summer brings peak crowds and humidity, so weekday arrivals and advance reservations help. Winter is quiet and scenic but cold, with limited services and possible icy park roads on the ridges.
Cold, occasional snow and ice on ridge roads; limited winter camping only.

The Lookout Trail is a short ridge hike that climbs above Turkey Creek Lake to panoramic views of the Shawnee State Forest. It is a favorite sampler of the park's classic hardwood ridge scenery. Trailhead parking can accommodate trucks and shorter RVs.
Turkey Creek Lake is a quiet park lake open to electric-motor boating and shoreline fishing for bass, bluegill, and catfish. A boat ramp and day-use parking serve anglers and paddlers. Non-motorized craft are welcome.
A public swimming beach on Turkey Creek Lake offers a sandy swim area during the warm season. It is a family-friendly spot within walking distance of the campground loops. Lifeguards are not on duty, so swim at your own risk.
The Shawnee Backpack Trail is a long, rugged loop through the surrounding state forest, with multiple primitive camps along steep ridges and hollows. It is a destination route for experienced backpackers. Day hikers can sample sections from several forest trailheads.
A network of paved forest roads winds across ridgetops with pull-offs and overlooks above the Ohio River hills. It is an ideal way to sample the area without a long hike. Smaller RVs and tow vehicles handle the route best; avoid unpaved spurs in large rigs.
An 18-hole golf course adjoins the park lodge with forested fairways and ridge views. Tee times are open to the public and visitors can reserve in advance. RV guests staying in the campground often pair a round with a lodge meal.
The Shawnee State Park Lodge sits on a ridge with sweeping views over the forest and offers dining, meeting space, and trail access. It is a convenient rainy-day stop or dinner destination for RV campers. Ample parking is available for larger vehicles.
We arrived at the campground, it was a pleasant surprise that everything was set up, the camper AC was on, the fridge was chilled and there was hot water. When the evening came, the shower had plenty of room and the beds were ready for sleeping. This is exactly what we needed!

Shawnee State Park, OH, United States
The park is reached via US 52 along the Ohio River, about 8 miles west of Portsmouth, Ohio, with the main park entrance on State Route 125. Common drive times are roughly 1.5 hours south of Columbus, about 2 hours east of Cincinnati, and about 2 hours southeast of Dayton. RV drivers should expect narrow, winding two-lane roads with steep grades and tight curves on State Route 125 and forest roads inside the park, so slow descents and low gears are recommended. The nearest major commercial airports for fly-and-rent travelers are Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International (CVG) and John Glenn Columbus International (CMH).
