Late April through mid-June is ideal, when wildflowers bloom in the meadows, temperatures are mild, and the Piedmont Overlook offers clear long-range views. September and October bring cooler air, lower humidity, and strong fall foliage across the Blue Ridge, making the shoulder season a favorite for RV travelers. Summer is green and lush but hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms possible. Winter visits are quieter, with open trails and occasional snow, though facilities and programming are reduced.
Cold, occasional snow and ice. Park open; some facilities on reduced schedule.

The Piedmont Overlook Trail is a short but steep climb across open meadow to a panoramic viewpoint of the Virginia Piedmont. Hikers gain roughly 400 feet of elevation in under a mile, making it the signature view in the park. Trailhead parking near the visitor center fits most RVs under 25 feet.
These connector trails climb from the meadows through hardwood forest to the Appalachian National Scenic Trail along the Blue Ridge crest. Loop distances typically run 4 to 6 miles with steady elevation gain. Parking is available at the main day-use lot.
Mount Bleak is a restored mid-19th-century farmhouse at the heart of the park with interpretive exhibits on Piedmont farm life. The surrounding historic area includes stone walls, outbuildings, and a walking loop suitable for all ages. Accessible from the main day-use parking area.
A short, mostly level trail leads to Turner Pond, a small stocked pond popular for bank fishing. A valid Virginia freshwater fishing license is required for anglers age 16 and older. Reachable from the main day-use parking area.
Gap Run Trail is a quieter forested loop through the southern section of the park, passing small streams and shaded woodland. The full loop runs roughly 2.5 miles with moderate grades. Good choice for warm afternoons when the meadows feel exposed.
Sky Meadows hosts regular evening astronomy programs in its designated star-gazing meadow, which benefits from limited light pollution relative to the D.C. metro. Programs are typically offered on clear Saturday nights in warmer months, often in partnership with local astronomy clubs. Day-use parking is used for program access.
The Lost Mountain section, across Route 17 from the main park, offers less-trafficked hiking and mountain biking on rolling terrain. Expect forested singletrack and old farm roads totaling several miles of interconnected loops. A separate trailhead lot serves this area.
Five stars! Renting this travel trailer was great. Very clean and comfortable. Emily is a great communicator and delivery service exceeded expectations. Highly recommend!

From the beginning of my inquiry, Michael was very communicative and prompt. Booking of their trailer was very easy. He walked me through every portion of the trailer and allowed me to come in advance to ensure I knew how to operate everything. The cleanliness of the camper was above par! They had everything one could need on a camping trip and all I had to bring was food and clothes - they took care of everything else (e.g., linens, towels, soap, dishes, etc.). Easy, relaxing experience!

Sky Meadows State Park, VA, United States
The park entrance is on Edmonds Lane off U.S. Route 17 near Paris, Virginia, roughly 10 minutes south of Interstate 66 at exit 23. From Washington, D.C., expect about 65 miles and 75 to 90 minutes via I-66 west; from Winchester the drive is about 30 miles and 35 minutes east on I-66 and U.S. 17. RV drivers should note that the final approach along Edmonds Lane is narrow and rural with tight turns near the visitor center, and the park road climbs to meadow parking areas with moderate grades. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Washington Dulles International (IAD), about 35 miles east.
