Late May through early September is the prime window for RV travel, with warm temperatures ideal for swimming at the Lake Ovid beach and long daylight hours for trail use. July and August bring peak crowds and the warmest water, while June offers greener scenery and fewer bugs than midsummer. September and early October are excellent shoulder-season choices, with cool nights, fall color, and quieter campground loops. Winter visits are possible for day use, but the modern campground typically operates on a seasonal schedule.

A sandy day-use beach on 410-acre Lake Ovid with shallow entry, restrooms, and a nearby picnic area. It is the park's main summer gathering spot and sits a short drive from the campground. RV-friendly parking is available at the day-use lot.
The park maintains roughly 16 miles of multi-use trails that loop through woods, wetlands, and the Lake Ovid shoreline. Most routes are flat, well-marked, and suitable for casual hikers. Trailhead parking at the day-use area accommodates larger vehicles.
Lake Ovid is a no-wake lake ideal for kayaks, canoes, and small fishing boats. A public boat launch with paved ramp and trailer parking is available on the south shore. Rentals are seasonally offered near the day-use area.
The reservoir is stocked and known for largemouth bass, northern pike, bluegill, crappie, and walleye. Shore fishing is productive near the dam and along designated pier areas. A Michigan fishing license is required for anglers 17 and older.
Several miles of shared-use singletrack and two-track trails wind through hardwood forest on the park's north side. Terrain is mostly rolling with few technical features, making it beginner-friendly. Equestrians and hikers share these trails, so yield accordingly.
The park's mix of wetlands, prairie restoration areas, and woodlots supports abundant birdlife including herons, osprey, waterfowl, and migrating songbirds. White-tailed deer and wild turkey are frequently spotted. Early morning on the Lakeshore Trail offers the best viewing.
In winter, a portion of the trail system is groomed for cross-country skiing and is open for snowshoeing. The campground is closed during this period, but the day-use lot remains plowed. A Recreation Passport is still required for entry.

We had a great weekend! Pickup and drop off were easy to coordinate and the unit was so light to tow with our Subaru outback. The camper came well equipped and was perfect for off-grid camping.

Sleepy Hollow State Park, MI, United States
The park is about a 25 to 30 minute drive (roughly 20 miles) north of Lansing via US-127 to the Price Road exit, then east to Upton Road. From Flint it is roughly 45 miles west, about an hour via I-69. There are no tunnels or mountain passes, and paved county roads into the park are suitable for large RVs, though drivers should watch for low-clearance rural rail crossings and tight turns on Price Road. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Lansing Capital Region International Airport (LAN), about 30 miles southwest.
