How to get to South Llano River State Park

The park is about 5 miles south of Junction via US 377 and Park Road 73, roughly 2 hours northwest of San Antonio and about 2.5 hours west of Austin via Interstate 10. Park Road 73 is paved and RV friendly, with no tunnels or steep mountain passes, though the low-water crossing inside the park can flood after heavy rain and should be checked before travel. The access road includes gentle Hill Country grades and a few tight curves, so larger rigs should take it slowly. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is San Antonio International Airport (SAT).

Best time to visit South Llano River State Park

March through May and September through early November are generally the best windows, with mild daytime temperatures, lower humidity, and comfortable river conditions. Summer brings hot afternoons often above 95 F but is peak season for tubing and swimming, so weekends book out early. Winter is quiet and good for birding and hiking, though some bottomland areas close to protect the turkey roost.
