South Llano River State Park, TX, United States
The park is about 5 miles south of Junction via US 377 and Park Road 73, roughly 2 hours northwest of San Antonio and about 2.5 hours west of Austin via Interstate 10. Park Road 73 is paved and RV friendly, with no tunnels or steep mountain passes, though the low-water crossing inside the park can flood after heavy rain and should be checked before travel. The access road includes gentle Hill Country grades and a few tight curves, so larger rigs should take it slowly. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is San Antonio International Airport (SAT).
March through May and September through early November are generally the best windows, with mild daytime temperatures, lower humidity, and comfortable river conditions. Summer brings hot afternoons often above 95 F but is peak season for tubing and swimming, so weekends book out early. Winter is quiet and good for birding and hiking, though some bottomland areas close to protect the turkey roost. Shoulder seasons typically offer the best mix of open river access and easier site availability for RVs.

Kayaks and canoes can be launched from park access points for calm-water paddling downstream toward Junction. The shallow, spring-fed flow is beginner friendly outside of flood conditions.
The park has roughly 18 miles of multi-use trails climbing from the river bottom into juniper and oak uplands. Routes range from short loops to longer rides suitable for mountain biking. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/south-llano-river
Four walk-in wildlife viewing blinds offer close looks at painted buntings, vermilion flycatchers, and many migratory songbirds. The blinds are an easy walk from the day-use parking area and suitable for all ages.
Anglers target Guadalupe bass, largemouth bass, channel catfish, and sunfish in the park stretch of the river. No fishing license is required to fish from shore within Texas State Parks. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/south-llano-river
The park protects one of the oldest continually used Rio Grande wild turkey roosts in central Texas. Roost areas close seasonally from fall through early spring, with viewing possible from designated points. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/south-llano-river
Low light pollution in this corner of the Hill Country gives campers clear views of the Milky Way on moonless nights. Open areas near the campgrounds work well for setting up chairs or a telescope.
