Spring (April and May) and fall (October and early November) are the most comfortable seasons, with mild daytime temperatures, lower humidity, and the best conditions for hiking the steep waterfall and ridge trails. Summer brings warm, humid weather and heavier weekend crowds at High Shoals Falls, so early arrivals or weekday visits are recommended. Winter is generally mild but can bring occasional snow or ice on higher elevations and unpaved access roads. October typically offers the strongest fall color across the hardwood forest.

The High Shoals Falls Loop is a roughly 2.7-mile loop hike to the park's signature 80-foot waterfall on Jacob Fork. The route includes stairs, boardwalks, and rocky terrain with a steep climb to the upper viewpoint. Trailhead parking accommodates passenger vehicles and smaller RVs.
The Hemlock Nature Trail is a short, mostly level loop along the Jacob Fork River near the visitor center. It is a good option for families and a warm-up before tackling the falls hike. The trailhead is reachable from the main parking area.
South Mountains offers a designated network of trails open to mountain bikes, including challenging climbs and descents in the backcountry. Riders should plan for sustained elevation gain and remote conditions. Bikes can be unloaded from RVs at the main day-use parking.
Jacob Fork is a designated mountain trout stream with sections of catch-and-release water inside the park. Anglers need a valid North Carolina fishing license and trout privilege. Several pull-offs and the main day-use lot provide access.
The park has a dedicated equestrian area with miles of horse-friendly trails through the South Mountain ridges. Riders can park horse trailers at the equestrian access and camp at the equestrian campground. Trails are shared in some sections with hikers and bikers.
Chestnut Knob is a strenuous out-and-back climb to a rocky overlook with long-range views of the South Mountains and surrounding piedmont. The trail gains significant elevation over a short distance. Park at the main visitor center lot.
Shaded picnic areas line the Jacob Fork River near the visitor center, with tables, grills, and easy stream access. The setting is family-friendly and a good base between hikes. The main lot accommodates RVs in marked oversized spaces when available.

South Mountains State Park, NC, United States
The park sits in Burke County roughly 20 miles south of Morganton, about an hour and 15 minutes northwest of Charlotte and around 90 minutes east of Asheville. Access is by paved state roads followed by a narrow, winding stretch of Sugar Loaf Road and South Mountain Park Avenue, with sharp curves and limited shoulders that require slow, attentive driving in larger RVs. There are no major tunnels or steep mountain passes on the approach, but trailers should expect a tight turn into the main parking area and limited turnaround space. The closest commercial airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT).
