Best time to visit Spencer Spit State Park

Late spring through early fall, roughly May through September, is the prime window for RV trips to Spencer Spit. Summer brings dry, mild weather, calm water for kayaking, and full campground operations, though ferry reservations fill up quickly during peak months. Shoulder months like May and September offer cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and easier ferry bookings. Winter visits are limited because the campground closes seasonally and island services run on reduced hours.

  • Hike the Park Trails Easy

The park features 2 miles of hiking trails. The wooded loops connect the upper campground to the beach and lagoon, offering a shaded alternative on hot summer afternoons.

  • Sea Kayaking on Lopez Sound Moderate
    RV parking available

Lopez Sound offers sheltered paddling with views of nearby islands and resident harbor seals. There are opportunities to rent sea kayaks and bicycles in the park to enjoy the waters of the Salish Sea.

  • Birdwatching at the Lagoon Easy
    RV parking available

The enclosed lagoon is a magnet for waterfowl, herons, and shorebirds. Its lagoon attracts migratory birds in the wintertime, making it an ideal spot for birdwatching.

  • Cycling Lopez Island Moderate
    RV parking available

Lopez is widely considered the most bike-friendly of the San Juan Islands thanks to its gentle terrain and quiet roads. Many RVers base at the park and ride loops to Lopez Village, Shark Reef Sanctuary, or Agate Beach.

  • Beachcombing and Tidepooling Easy
    RV parking available

Low tides expose driftwood beaches, sand dollars, and tide-pool life along the spit. Bring layers, as onshore breezes can make the beach cooler than the interior campground.

This was our first time renting a trailer and it was awesome! Mark and his wife were lovely people and it was a pleasure meeting and communicating with them. We had everything we needed in the trailer and it worked perfectly for where we were with no hookups. Anytime we had questions, Mark was very quick to answer and explained everything about the trailer before they left. Thank you so much guys! :)

How to get to Spencer Spit State Park

Spencer Spit is on Lopez Island, reached by Washington State Ferries from Anacortes, about a 40 to 45 minute sailing. Anacortes is roughly 85 miles (about 1 hour 45 minutes) north of Seattle via I-5 and WA-20, and around 90 miles (about 2 hours) south of Vancouver, BC. RVers must make a vehicle reservation with Washington State Ferries, check length and height measurements, and arrive early for loading, as oversized vehicles pay by total length.
